New Windows-powered tablet-notebook hybrids now in SA

Pretty nice pricing if the specs are anything useful at all.

Now this is interesting..

*goes hunting for more concrete specs*

HP has a $100 7" windows tablet wonder if it will hit our market too

Lol that's worse than my old NETbook that I got 3 years ago for R2k, and that also had a 320GB hard drive. FAIL. Nextbook? More like Previousbook.

Yeah your netbook had an old atom processor, the new quad core Bay Trails are orders of magnitude better than the old half arsed atoms.

Hmmm ... R1499 for the 8" at Makro.

• 8 inch High-resolution 1280 x 800 Touch Screen (Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display)
• Intel® ATOM™ Quad-Core Z3735G Processor / 1.8GHZ (2M Cache, up to 1.83 GHz)
• 1GB DDR3L; 16GB onboard storage
• WIFI 802.11 b/g/n
• Bluetooth4.0
• Front Camera 0.3 MP ; Back camera 2.0 MP
• Micro HDMI
• Micro-SD card slot for expansion to 64GB
• Support 3 -axis G-sensor
• Built-in Headphone/Microphone
• Charging indicator light

Pity only 16GB... but tempting for media device instead of full PC route.

Anyone manage to get their hands on one. They should have used Takealot to move the stock fast. Now I will have to inconvenience myself to drive to Makro. Hope it's worth it.

Did that Netbook have the new Atom processor, and a touch screen etc etc?

R 1499. That's how much my wife's Netbook cost me over 6 years ago.
A Acer Aspire One - first gen netbook running a custom version of Linspire (Debian GNU)
It has been replaced with a very decent Lenovo, but the little thing just won't stop working. Its in its pouch in my study - ported to Linux Mint, and I know for a fact I can boot it up right now and it will still tick over. Such a neat little system - I actually feel guilty I don't have a use for it. (Anyone have a tech curious kid looking for a 7 inch netbook - call me)

If this 8 inch gives anywhere near the equivalent service - then it is well worth it. I'm actually tempted to get the bigger one for my Mother-in-Law.

they have managed a pretty cute markup ... if you google nextbook, the 10 inch has 32gb of storage and costs 199 usd retail ..

16Gb internal storage ? That isn't even enough for a windows 8.1 install...

You'll be left with 512Mb for your excells and mp3 album :D . But i guess there is a stripped down version for these tables, but again they said it's the full win8.1 so confused there

Heheheh... pop in 64GB SD card and stream all the stuff from HDD connected to router and also external HDD if need be.

Cannot find a half-decent android thing for R1499... this Nextbook sounds tempting.

Nothing a 64gb sd card can't fix.
Just don't make the same mistake most people did with netbooks. Its not a laptop. Its a tablet with a keyboard, for more portable tasks.

Which equates to R2240.48 at current rates, excluding taxes.

So add your 10% duty, and 14% VAT and that comes to R2809.56.

So I would say they're not making massive profits on the unit tbh... They get it for cheaper than $199 for sure, but they have to ship them here which costs money.

I would say they're probably making about R400 per unit, at most.
