New Windows-powered tablet-notebook hybrids now in SA

Which equates to R2240.48 at current rates, excluding taxes.

So add your 10% duty, and 14% VAT and that comes to R2809.56.

So I would say they're not making massive profits on the unit tbh... They get it for cheaper than $199 for sure, but they have to ship them here which costs money.

I would say they're probably making about R400 per unit, at most.
The local models both seem to have 16gb of storage.

looking at the info presented and some complaints about the Surface I actually think they are presenting 16 gigs after the OS install

interestingly I wonder if Microsoft has acquired the branding rights for NeXT ...

Did that Netbook have the new Atom processor, and a touch screen etc etc?

At the time, yes of course it had the newest Atom available. Atoms still suck by the way, they are designed to. And who cares about a touch screen, having something that works is more important. How smooth do you think Windows 8 will run on that one single GB of RAM? And where will you put it on the ginormous 16GB storage?

Build quality and battery life... I will be interested to hear some feedback about this.

Would be fun to install Bluestacks on it just for sheetz and gigglez.

The questions on Wallmart about it is a bit excruciating - 'does it have a floppy drive, etc' but the average battery life is supposedly about 6 hours.

According to the US press release the NextBooks are being launched via Walmart. Which means that Makro will get (a) a good price and (b) a certain degree of exclusivity.

The specification - Office 365 plus OneDrive - seems to indicate that the expected usage is more tablet / netbook than the Surface, which is tablet / laptop.

That said:

  • What will the on-going Office 365 plus OneDrive subscription charge be after the first year ?
  • Is the USB port 2 or 3. And can it mount USB devices e.g. hard drives ?
  • Will this run Windows 8.1 apps ?

You'll be left with 512Mb for your excells and mp3 album :D . But i guess there is a stripped down version for these tables, but again they said it's the full win8.1 so confused there

On my Asus, Windows folder alone is 10GB, still need to add program files. You'll be using the micro SD or cloud storage for this one.

8 inch tablet + R400 Microsoft wedge keyboard= full blown windows experience in 8 inches of glory.
Sounds like I am going to be paying Makro a visit.

You still need a cover or a stand for the tablet, sadly that's a deal breaker for me.

Yea, I guess you can use the wedge as the stand, but in all fairness its cumbersome at best.

Oh and you need a Bluetooth mouse aswell, then you need to carry three separate things with you, instead of just one nettop, its a missed opportunity from MS.
