The Tata Bolt Thread (Tata Lovers)

Was getting worried WRT the Turbo in my Clio. I never let it idle, lol.

I do, have a slow drive to do for about 1km at 20km/h, to my place after entering the estate, I assume that is enough, if I really have to baby its turbo.

If there is no instruction like that in the user manual about the turbo then you probably don't need to.

Test drove the sedan one earlier today. Great little car and the interior is very nice. Looks nicer for me than the Smart Forfour. More conservative and classy in my opinion. Struggled a bit with clutch control, but that is normal for me when I drive a new car that I am not familiar with. I told him he must go ahead and get me a silver one. Should have it Wednesday :)

On the Hatch. It is cheaper and has the exact same features and engine. I dont need the extra boot space. I am a loner and never really have a passenger in the car with baggage. :)

Have you decided on getting the base model XMS or the higher spec XT version? I see there is a R 15,000 cashback offer 'on special' for the Tata Bolt models.

I am going for the higher spec XT one. Just figured if I am going to buy a brand new car, I might as well go for that and get all the goodies. I saw that R15 000.00 special. They are contributing R20 000 towards my deposit :)

TATA Bolt Pricing comparison - India vs South Africa.
(Current pricing as per manufacturer websites)

Model: India Price (Mumbai) vs SA Price (@ 0.21c to 1 Indian Rupee)

Tata Bolt XMS 1.2 Revotron (Hatch) : R 115,325 vs R 157,995 (37.00% more expensive)

Tata Bolt XT 1.2 Revotron (Hatch) : R 127,654 vs R 167,995 (31.60% more expensive)

Tata Bolt XMS 1.2 Revotron (Sedan) : R 130,326 vs R 167,995 (28.90% more expensive)

Tata Bolt XT 1.2 Revotron (Sedan) : R 143,470 vs R 177,995 (24.06% more expensive)

(Note: TATA sells the hatch as the Bolt and the sedan as the Zest in India, both versions are sold in SA under the Bolt badge)

As usual, SA motorists have to dig quite a bit deeper into their pockets, compared to motorists in India, but these SA prices for TATA are, in some instances, significantly LESS than the inflated prices of India-sourced models from other manufacturers, such as Mahindra (KUV100) & Renault (Kwid).

We can thank our country's import tax for that I guess. :(

Nice one! Congrats!

Tell me something, in terms of the turbo, did you have to rev it up a bit to get into that sweet spot of boost? E.g. ~1600-3000rpm?

Pulled pretty nicely without flooring it. I shifted to 2nd from frist after pulling away a bit quickly at one point and it did struggle a bit there, but that was my own fault.

When I opened the garage door so that he can pull the car in after arriving at the house the fan was singing very loudly. Almost sounded like my sister's Mini countryman when she finished driving it. I am guessing it is to cool the turbo down?

Were you driving with the AC on? That can also make the fan spin for a bit after the engine is turned off

Try doing the same tomorrow but with the AC turned off for the last 2 or so kilometers before home. The AC condenser and car coolant radiator are usually cooled by the same fan so if your AC is on your rad fan will by default also be engaged.

Btw I haven't congratulated you yet on your purchase...so congrats! May she give you many happy miles and smiles

Haha, yep, if you shift too soon without getting into boost you will feel the lag hard, these small motors want to be pushed a bit, you'll get used to it and then you truly start enjoying it.

My Clio is the same, after a hot day driving, the fan will be loud as I park it then turn off just after I turn off the car. The little turbo motors do tend to heat up quite a bit.

Will do. I will only get it on Wednesday I think. They are closed for the public holidays :( Thank you. I am very excited to him. I think I shall christen him "Rajesh" lol

Out of interest. When the car is put into Eco mode, does that turn the turbo off completely?

Most likely not. I've generally noticed that all it does is limit the revs. That's on a Honda Jazz that I'm driving this month and a Picanto I had previously. Unfortunately, no experience with turbo cars with an eco button

I don't believe it totally cuts it off, maybe it limits the boost quite a bit, but if you put the accelerator all the way in e.g. if you are overtaking, it will go into its normal boost, to give as much power as possible.
