The Tata Bolt Thread (Tata Lovers)

I have had two Tata Indica models over the last 5 years, firstly a 2005 1.4 LSi which I purchased pre-owned from a dealer in Feb 2011 for R 38,500, (with 59,000 kms on the odometer - it came with 14" mags and 4 new tyres), and sold privately in Nov 2015 for R 29,500, with 133,500 kms on it.

Apart from regular servicing every 15,000 kms - I had an extended service plan up to 90,000 kms (which thankfully included the cam-belt replacement), the only other items I had to replace were regular 'wear & tear' items, such as tyres, brake pads / shoes, the odd blown bulb now & again, V-belts, a new battery and, at around 116,000 kms, I also fitted 4 new tyres (185/60 R14), a new clutch as well as a new radiator expansion tank & hoses.

I also check all fluids and tyre pressures at least once every 2 weeks or so, and top-up as needed.

It never left me stranded on the side of the road - apart from one occasion when I left the lights on all day at the office and roadside assist had to jump-start it - and my overall highway fuel economy was around the 7.5 l/100 km mark - I got it down to about 5.5 l/100 km once on a trip to Durban, but town driving saw it jump to around 9.0 l/100 km or so.

In Nov 2015, I saw an online ad for a 2008 model 1.4 LXi (with 69,000 kms on the odometer) which, in addition to the aircon and power steering (also fitted as standard on the LSi), came 'fully loaded' with additional features such as Dual Airbags & Seat-belt Pre-tensioners, ABS & EBD, electric windows & remote central locking, a lights on / door open / key in ignition buzzer and was fitted with a more powerful 63kw / 120Nm engine, as opposed to the LSi's 55Kw / 110Nm engine.

As the new LXi was originally fitted with the standard 14" steel wheels / plastic hubcaps and 175/65 R 14 tyres when I took delivery of it, I simply did a direct swap and put the mags / tyres from my old LSi on the new LXi and vice-versa (I had the wheel alignment / balancing done on both cars, once the swap was complete).

Just over a year later, the odometer on the LXi is now at around 83,300 kms (14,300 kms later) and, apart from the 75,000 km service in April this year, all I have had to replace so far is a set of H4 headlight bulbs (with the Philips XtremeVision bulbs) when the dipped beam filament blew on one of them.

Other than that, it has been trouble-free motoring for me and I expect it will remain so for as long as I decide to keep it & have it regularly serviced & maintained.

My eye is definitely now on the new Tata Tiago (which replaced the original Indica v2 in India in 2015) - apparently due to be launched here in SA in Q3 of 2017 - and, as soon as the petrol AMT version is also available here, I will be trading in my LXi for the Tiago AMT.

So, in summary, to all the nay-sayers of the reliability (or lack thereof) of Tata vehicles, my experience has been exemplary so far and has definitely instilled a sense of confidence for me in their products, both old (Indica) & new (Bolt / Zest / Tiago).

Hello, I read thru the thread & found it interesting.

Firstly, Congradulations on your new car.

Korean cars are really expensive now, so I think Tata will become the new Hyundai & Kia in SA. The Indian economy is showing growth & this isn't a good thing for SA.

Cars like the figo, i10, i20, suzuki, tata etc are produced in India & these "affordable" options will eventually become expensive. The SA economy isn't showing any signs of growth, hopefully car prices won't go through the roof.

Sorry if this is off topic. Why is a 2015 Opel Adam selling for R130k with remainder of service plan & warranty. Is the Adam a good car?

There's nothing wrong with the vehicle but the service from the dealership and lack of parts let the brand down locally.

Pretty cool.

Btw how is that infotainment system?

Ito usability; functionality & responsiveness?

Have not played with it that much I have to say. I have linked my phones to it via bluetooth and set up the radio stations the way I like it. It does have very nice sound.

I spoke to the Tata guy regarding that and he admitted they did have a bad track record regarding that, but to change that they now keep more spares in stock locally, and introduced a policy of if the part you require is not available in 24 hours you get it for free.

Exactly what you do to show confidence in your brand, hope the attitude rubs on to other brands like Geeky, Mahindra etc.

Another thing I really like about the Bolt is that it is actually a very high car. You sit high and when you stop at a red light, you kinda look down into the window of normal hatch backs and sedans. Being tall, it is also great as it is much for comfortable getting in and out compared to my old Mini Cooper and even the Ford Figo I had as a courstesy car from the insurance. Even my sister comented on how big it actually is parked next to her Mini Countryman. The cooper and the figo looked small compared to it, but the Bolt pretty much now makes the Countryman look small lol. Not sure if it is the design of the Bolt or the fact that it is such high car, but that is a definate perception it creates for me.

One thing I would have really liked on the Bolt that it does not have, is either a button on the key to open the boot remotely, or a lever on the boot to open it. Unfortunately with the Bolt, as with the Figo, you have to actually insert the key to unlock it and open the boot or use the lever on the driver side seat.

What? I had to wait months for a replacement door lock last year.

This is pretty damn impressive.

Ockie, your endorsement of Tata is making me feel better about the brand tbh.

Had to quickly pop past Tata today. I realized that the petrol cap does not open when the lever is pulled inside the car. Turned out to be just a piece of wrapping plastic that was left on the latch from manufacturing and so the latch would not release.

@ Pitbull, it really is a great little car. Perhaps just go and test drive one for the hell of it?

So, I have tested all the driving modes and I am now leaving it on the default Sport mode for my daily driving. It goes OK in the others, but it is not a enjoyable drive then really for me. I still drive it in a chilled out way, but it is nice to have the extra oomf on demand when you want it and being able to go up Silvias Pass in third without the engine struggling or having to shift back to second.

On the highway if it is clear and not busy I switch to to Eco, but when you do you can definately feel a change in the action soon as you press the button.

I must ask, how well does the car deal with crosswinds? My Polo isn't afraid to throw me into the side barrier :(

P.S Congrats on your new purchase!

mmm I have not really taken it out on the highway on a windy day. But what I can say is that it is very stable on the highway, The steering stiffens up as you go faster, unlike the Kwid where it felt like it was just going all over the place. I feel very safe in it on the highway.

Thanks, that's good to know. It's amazing how this car has features that luxury cars 5 times the price have. I hope you have many more happy and trouble-free kilometres ahead :)
