Android is as secure as the iPhone – Google

Except it isn't, because the OEMS never push updates out.

Didn't you read the article?

Ludwig said Android’s built-in security product called Safety Net scans 400 million devices and checks 6 billions apps per day.
This has resulted in*less than 1% of Android devices containing malware.

The worrying thing though is that there are over a billion Android devices sold yearly. And 1% of a billion is 10 million. So, which end of the 0 - 10,000,000 scale are we talking here, because it gets pretty bad towards the upper end? And that doesn't take into account the existing user base either.

Also, why is there a need to check 6 billion apps/day?

Of course the downside is that it appears Safety Net doesn't work if the phone is using a custom ROM or has been rooted. But I'm guessing the vast majority of Android users don't go that route.
