Google pulls apps linked to WireX botnet

everyone running android should update their phones and install the latest security patches... oh wait...

This is not an exploit and it is not something that can be fixed with security patches. These are apps that contain malicious code to do this, and if you have these apps installed you will become part of the botnet. You should be worried if your phone is rooted, apps can make themselves permanent if they gain root access to the device, making your device a permanent member of the botnet.

Although, it would be nice if we can get Oreo quickly...
 
I think geo-restrictions on app /service availability also put users at risk. In this case yes there were universally available apps in the store that were soiled. Examples of geo-restrictions that put people at risk are say you want BBC iPlayer in SA you gotta consider sideloading , you want the Comedy Central app you gotta sideload . That's where people sometimes get caught
