While you can't change the Gmail one from default, you can select in the other two (sms messages and calendar).
Not so fast... I'm using Google's calendar and sms apps, neither of which offer custom notifications from within their own settings. When accessing options via sound settings, there is but one option for "notification", which reads: "Default ringtone for messaging, email and calendar"

So it's an issue with Google apps only?
If you go into your Gmail settings > General settings > Manage notifications, then click on "Email" under your email address > Sound.
I'm not sure why it's so hidden in Oreo. *

So, I'm going to the shops today. Do I get a mate 10 or a note 8?
Keep in mind I'm coming from three notes, so my question, is does the mate 10 have enough to make me not miss the spen?

You know what I can't get it to do :
Upload photos to Google Photos automatically when on WiFi. Previously I'd snap photos all day and the minute I walked in the house, it would upload them. It's worked like this on every phone barring this.
Here, I snap all day and only when I go into the Google Photos app, does it start the backing up process. So, if I go for a week without going into the app, all my photos are still sitting on the phone itself. Previously, I knew my photos were backed up daily.
I've double checked the setting from Google and actually formatted my phone as new from yesterday - still the same.

All in all I had fun with the Huawei. It being my very first one. I've played with friends' devices in the past, and it never impressed me. It actually just pushed me to never go this route. But having received this review unit have changed my mind about what Huawei is about. These guys have come very far from behind, and I don't think it will be long before they are the top Android OEM in the world.
I will be keeping a keen eye on their progress that's for sure, and hope I can be part of their future

I have the same problem with my Note 8. I have to check again, but I think it has to do with the app being put into a coma by the OS. I'm going to play around with some settings and see if it improves.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro Review
This is my first review on request and on a product that I do not own.
Also my first delve into the premier phone category, as I normally go for mid-market phones that have punchy specs for their price. So in this regard, I do not have side by side comparisons with any other phone in the same category.

In the box the phone comes with a super-charger, earphones (USB-C), USB-C to audio jack convertor, and a phone cover. Also received mine with a pre-installed tempered glass.
Design:
Hats off to the team that designed the body phone – phone feels absolutely luxurious in the hand. Considering the specs, the phone is smaller, thinner and lighter than one would expect. The fingerprint reader is in exactly the correct spot where your index finger would rest when holding the phone. The fingerprint-unlock is so fast it feels instantaneous.
The back of the phone being glass, a cover is recommended if you are not very careful with your phones. I am not one for covers and like to enjoy the feel of my phones. I have long gotten into the habit of only keeping a handkerchief in the same pocket as my phone, and all keys, coins etc in other pockets.
Performance:
Performance-wise the Mate 10 Pro did not disappoint – the phone is blindingly fast. The interface offers two layout options – (1) the iPhone style with all apps on a multiple screen layout; (2) standard Android app drawer style (my preference). Apps / menus open without lag on either layout options, and are very responsive, even with multiple apps open (cue 6GB RAM).
Huawei’s Kiron 970 chip in the Mate 10 Pro comes with a dedicated AI chip (neural processing unit). The AI (artificial assistance) powered translator (with off-line support) works well for the most part. The only times I’ve found it to struggle a little is with quite small text or where there are multiple languages in the same area.
Camera:
The other application benefitting from the AI chip is the camera with 13 scene auto-detect (blue sky, flower, plant, beach, sunrise/sunset, performance, food, text, nightscape, snow, cat, dog, and portrait). This provides a significant advantage over a one-auto-mode-for-all type scenario. For me personally, the biggest step up from my mid-market phones to the Mate 10 Pro has been the camera. Significantly better picture quality in both the auto and manual modes, and support for RAW files in manual mode. In wide angle mode, you might however experience depth-of-field leakage around intricate objects.
Desktop mode:
A relative new feature in the mobile phone space is the desktop mode which pushes mobile phones towards being hybrid pc devices. The Mate 10 Pro achieves this with a USB-C to HDMI cable which can then be connected to a screen / tv / projector. As it's still a new concept not all your apps will appear on the pc mode. PC mode mimics a Windows pc - start/program menu bottom left and battery/wifi/notification menu/clock bottom right. Phone can be used are the mouse/keyboard with support for a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. For presentations on the go this will come in handy.
Screen:
The screen has a 18:9 aspect ratio HD+ display. You do have the option to force applications into 18:9 that do not natively support it. I have not experienced any apps crashing due to the forced aspect ratio. I watch a lot of Youtube videos. Videos tend to leave black strips on the sides in landscape mode, but this can be easily overcome by zooming in fill the screen. Text/icons are sharp, and colours are vibrant. One issue while watching Youtube videos is a sudden screen lock on receiving incoming messages (Tsepz_011 experienced it with Facebook Messenger, while I’ve experience it with incoming Whatsapp messages). Latest firmware reportedly fixes this issue.
Battery:
From the dawn of the smartphone the number one gripe has been 1 day battery life (or less) depending on usage. The Mate 10 Pro packs a surprisingly large 4000mAh battery into a slim form factor (7.9mm). During the first couple of days I was somewhat disappointed with the battery life, but after some tweaking of how apps use battery, 7+ hours screen-on-time is possible in standard mode (down to 10%), and 10+ hours screen on time is possible in power saving mode (down to 10%) on a single charge. For low screen-on-time, at least 2 days on standard mode and 2+ days on power saving mode is possible. For heavy users one day is easily achieved. All times are dependent on apps and services you are using. For a 4000mAh battery, it charges super-fast. From 20% to 100% in +/- 75 minutes. 50% charge from flat is achieved in 30 minutes.
Updates:
Updates are service provider dependant (because of logo/app adulteration), and at time of writing Vodacom had not release the latest firmware for the handset I was using (while other’s like Telkom had). So no fix on the YouTube/lock-screen issue at the time of writing.
I have used the Mate 10 Pro as my daily phone for the past 2 month from the day I received it. I have thoroughly enjoyed using the phone.
