Hello

I found my E220 USB modem kept disconnecting after long period of use or when using skype for a while. I suspected that this had something to do with transmitting (i.e. uploading) as this uses more power. Apon investigating I found that it seemed to be running too hot (n.b. I am an eletronics engineer by profession). So I with some diffculty pulled off the plastic cover (nullifying the warranty) and drilled a whole lot of holes in the plastic cover. (Could not leave it off as it holds the sim card in place).
Since then it has never disconnected ( four days now)
Ciao

Interesting. I'll mention to my customers not to overuse their modem. It may overheat and damage due to excessive use.

By the way, my buddy told of a time he had a customer who had trouble connecting. And upon inspecting the device, the LED was blinking RED, and when he touched the modem, his hand burnt!

If you pull out a drill, I'll also start working......:D

(reminds me of a van Damme movie they shot at my house once where they drilled a guy full of holes with an electric drill!! Was blood everywhere...)

Never seen this one before, the PCMCIA cards can overheat if the laptop exhaust is too close. But I'll pass to Huawei, thanks.

Why didnt you record anything?!? :D

I found that my E220 does heat up if i stay connected all day(Like today), but its just warm.

Wouldn't the overheating problem be caused by a poor signal strength i.e. the modem would need to increase the transmit power and hence use more power? Maybe a better location or an aerial might fix the problem?

That's just one factor that could cause it.

:) No, it was a standard 'Muscles from Brussels' movie with lots of action, blood and bad dialogue.

Had Catherine Bell over (for sci-fi movie 'The Triangle') the other day, much more appealing...;)

Catherine Bell??? NICE MAN!

thanks for the warning on the E220 overheating

Hot E220

Howzit

I remember seeing a post a while ago regarding a E220 modem that gets hot but I did not see any replies.

Mine gets so hot when downloading that it's very unconfortable to handle it.

It is normal, no?

Cheers

Donny

Most definitely not, no...
Agreed - it is not normal for an E220 [at least not mine that is] to get so hot that it is uncomfortable to handle.

@Donny31, I don't remember an existing post or thread about this - send me a link if you find it.

I also recall a thread about a hot E220. One user said they had drilled holes in the cover (obviously voiding the warranty).

My E220 tends to get hot, but not so hot that i cant handle it. For the other guys, maybe too much power going through the modem?

You can't 'send' too much power through something, current is 'drawn' by a device.

The high-power components will be the radio transmitters, so it stands to reason that if you upload a lot the modem will get hotter. Also, if more of the radios work (constant switching between 2G/3G), heat will increase.

If you're in a bad signal area or heavily used cell, the radios will up their power output and again heat will increase.

Also, make sure you use the USB cable with both the USB connectors to increase the power available to the modem.
