Telkom starts billing for local ADSL bandwidth

This will not last... Telkom is still in violation of the ICASA stipulated regulations in that local bandwidth cannot be capped. This current structure still is in the form of a restriction.

But by telscum reasoning you are not capped. You can use as much as you want to but pay for it afterward :D

That is not capped, but I don't know what that is. At least vodacom, mtn and cell-c offers uncapped voice calls. :p

So they have started charging us for going over the limit, does that mean I will receive a bill at the end of this month charging me for something I was not even told I had to pay for?

It is unlimited, hence not capped, but they will just charge what ever they want for it. I don't see Telkom ever been prosecuted for that since they are not capping your local bandwidth.

What about prepaid? If I buy prepaid, and "go over" I am capped.

Can anyone confirm they have been contacted once exceeding their allocated "free" amount? If they just start charging, I know some people might need to take out a loan to pay it off.

It will be interesting to see how MWEB reacts to this...

‘free local bandwidth’ service as part of a trial in which users were given access to free, unlimited local bandwidth.
where and when was this ever free? utter nonsense! telkom lies cheats and steals in broad day light! what makes it worse they getting away with it thanks to gov (poison ivy). and this capping crap too, they claim you never capped threshold, same old lies same old crap.

started making inquiries the other day for satellites internet, and no not telkoms vsat crap.getting prices from other countries for sat equipment obviously they not allowed to operate in this country. i just going to ship the stuff here and set it up on pas 6 and pas10 i think....

Well if you buy 1GB and use 1GB I suppose you are cappped untill you buy more, unlike Telscum that just lets you go waaaaaaaaaay over your cap and then says pay fool or get cut off!! heck even if I did have a DSL line from Telkom first Day I would go to Openweb or Axxess they are about 50-90% cheaper than Melkhom!

Could have seen this one comming, Telkom has probably found people are using alot more local than average and decided that it's a GREAT way to make some money!

7GB's+ downloaded this month all from int websites, and only cost me R300 :D I <3 uncapped, I </3 64k speeds :)

Does this mean they will be charging us for bandwith used in march or does the billing start in april ? Otherwise i am in da k*k

If they charge for local then it means that international is uncapped as well. U can always buy more international as long as you got the money!

The TI-Tracker page clearly stipulates that Telkom reserves the right to bill you R25.55/Gig from 1 Feb 2008 if you go over your allotted 10/20/30GB

Which makes local "capped".
So Telkom is capping local - whether it is as retailer or wholesaler.

It is telkoms way of getting around the legalities. Either way you look at it, it is wrong but they push the limits and there is no real party that can force them to comply. I know we have a company that tries but lets face it, they are about as useless as Telkom and Eskom put together.

But not everyone uses the TI-Tracker, many people don't know how to use it.
And the information you get via e-mail (Usage details) is so bloody wrong or confusing that anyone (even a smart IT oke) wouldn't know what going on.

R25.55? Man that is rediculous. Webafrica charge R19 if I am not mistaken. I feel sorry for people that signed up for 24 month contracts with Telkom, at least people with Telkom contracts know how iBurst users feel

At least, those that were not warned against it.
Those that went in to a contract for a "free coffee mug" or whatever, and had "our" advice, get what they deserve.
:p

Why is everybody is crying foul?
I distinctly remember a mail from Telkom stipulating the fact that they are having a local bandwidth promotion and that exceeding your allotted limit will be billed at R25.55/GB.
IMHO, some chose to play ignorant and are now going to feel the pain.

People are moaning about having to pay for it at all - and not just that they may get big bills.
It is supposed to be free.
