I'm getting (slow) international on my capped TI account. I wonder if it's related.

Probably, as you will be switched to the SAFE route and competing with all the call centres in India!

I thought that SAIX had purchased Seacom bandwidth for this eventuality.

Obviously not?

No, they already had redundancy in the SAFE cable and didn't want to invest in the Seacom cable which has no redundancy. Good plan, huh? :D

What's the diff between a major cable break and a non-major cable break. Surely if the cable is broke, it is broke?

They also have redudancy via satellite at Hartebeeshoek Earth Station...

There is redundancy in place. Not going to go into all the technical aspects of this break (need to dig out the emails I got on it yesterday and I've not had my first cuppa java yet) but its not physical as in a entire pipe cut in two.

The actual maintenance started yesterday and will continue till tomorrow. They will then continue on 31 Jan - 1 Feb (about 48 hours).

EDIT: Sat3 is not a single fibre but falling back to satellite is common procedure.

The route to South Korea is really bad.

SA to London is 700ms at its own. Then to United States then to China and only then South Korea.

Why is the route to ASIA going through the UK and US?

So they do maintenance without even warning, how unusual of them
