‘SA telecoms costs extremely high’

“South African consumers enjoy lower charges for wireless and mobile broadband access, compared, for example, to countries like Australia and Britain, as competition in this segment advanced,” the report points out.

This is factually incorrect. Here is an article about HSDPA pricing in the UK - apparently rates for 3GB have fallen as low as 7.5 British Pounds. How much data can you purchase in SA for <R120 per month - 120MB? SA consumers who spend <R120 per month would be paying approximately 25 times more for data than UK consumers!

3, one of the first UK operators to introduce mobile broadband, offers 18-month broadband contracts which include 3GB of content - the equivalent of six to ten hours of video on the BBC iPlayer - for £15 a month. For existing 3 customers, the package costs £7.50 a month. Tiscali's lowest fixed-line "broadband and talk" package - which includes line rental - costs £9.99 per month.

Here is an example of what Vodafone Australia offer. Virgin, 3 and Optus? all have similarly priced offers. This offer includes one month free access plus a free USB modem - all for <R289 per month. In SA you could get 1GB together with a free USB modem for that price i.e. more than 5 times more expensive.

wow no kidding! sorry can't think anything more sarcastic to say.

Telkom, in which government holds a 39 percent direct stake and a further 17 percent through the Public Investment Corporation, still has a monopoly of fixed telecommunications

Who is this telkom? Never heard of them.

If this article has any relevance to truth, someone would have commented on it a long time ago!

As usual more commentary and no actual action. Typical.

No ***** sherlock......

Wish there was something being done about it, but that is most likely to much to ask for in SA.

Maybe someone should start a forum/website of some sort where excessive broadband prices are discussed. Why hasn't anyone thought of that yet....?

Are you sure this article is not from the "Archive" section? If you are, then I don't see what is news here...
