Yes, I know that regular readers of this forum will know that I am not the world biggest Apple fan. And no, I am not drunk nor crazy, but I think that it is time people give credit where it is due.
Whether you love the Iphone or hate it - the truth is that it has done the mobile industry the world of good. For one, it showed that user interfaces can be made more people friendly. Yes, it lacks many feature and is technically not as good as other phones. But its biggest claim to fame, the user interface, is done better than anywhere else (at this stage).
If you love the iPhone, well then you do not have to read on, if you hate it (as I do) then just keep the following in mind :
So sure, iPhone is over-hyped, over-priced and it lacks in many areas where the big players have had years to develop in, but it is the best competition that the mobile market has seen in years.
Like the CEO of Toyota said at the launch of the Prius, this is not the ultimate solution (a diesel Polo 1.4 has better consumption) BUT it is a step in the right direction and other industry makers will respond (and appreciate) the challenge.
For all the iPhone's short comings, just keep in mind what it is doing for the bigger picture. As for myself, I cannot wait to see what touchscreen phone Nokia comes up with after the 5800

- It got Nokia to make a copy of it.
- Samsung also made their version of it.
- Newer phones are pushing for WVGA screens just to stay ahead.
- Nokia's music service is developing a lot faster since the iPhone.
- User interfaces are given a serious make over (like Symbian V5 Taco).
- Feature sets of phones across the market has been spec'ed up in response to the iPhone
