Vodacom prepares for 100Mbps

Whats the footprint of one of those 100mbps towers? I'm guessing one would need a lot of them judging by the difference between GSM->HSDPA.

Long story short - Telkom is the telecommunications roadblock of this country.

*sings* I hate Telkoooom.. woohooohooooo-la-la.... Yes I doooooooo...

100 mbps! While telkom has adsl in most parts of S.A no wonder telkom has e1 lines waiting,u think they want vodacom to overtake them at their own game

So once again it comes down to being telkoms fault.

The coverage depends on the frequency allocated to networks. In the u.s it will be the 700mhz band we'll most likely follow what europe dose then again we'll always have. Vodafone said in 2000 they were rolling out 3g in the uk but on switched it on in 2003 so dont hold your breath for lte, they also trailing evolved hspa. Even softbank mobile (ex vodafone japan) says it wont jump ship to lte yeat. They deploying evolved hspa in the interim due to the high cost of lte.

It's always Telkom's fault... :p

I tried ordering a new phone line about 3 months ago, the telkom representative couldn't tell me if I could get a phone line in my area, and said that I should go from door to door and ask my neighbours if any one of them has a phone line... haha, hilarious!!

got to love telkom! :p

Why can't they use Dark Fibre Africa or Neotel? Roll out the 7.2 mb/s service where you can get Neotel and DFA to help you with the backhaul? What about their own fibre network. The roads are dug up all over Durban so a lot of base stations must have fibre near to them...

Not so easy. It is the plan to carry traffic over their own fibre network - and using DFA when needed - but there are many base stations...not easy to build fibre to then all. One can use Microwave, but then spectrum may be an issue. Maybe V3G can give more datils here.

At those speeds on their current tariff model you would be bankrupt in no time flat.

Give us 5c per megabyte !

Well it can only be a good thing that Vodacom is preparing for 100mbps, this obviously means that their alternate plans for backhaul are starting to see the light. :)

100Mb/sec? at R2.00 per MB its going to be a killing.
And since Vodascum charge extra for HSDPA 3.6 I only have to
wonder how much extra they'll charge for this on top of
the bw charges.

Prices will come down. Telkom is set to launch their HSDOPA offering and I think we can expect aggressive pricing. And Neotel must just improve their device...

Unfortunately, it's not that easy. Neotel and DFA are involved in either their own projects, or existing projects for other companies. They all want discrete fibre and no access to other companies on that fibre route, or even to the sheath/manhole where their ducting runs.

If someone laid large core fibre and allowed it to be shared/utilised by anyone willing to pay per fibre pair, it would be easier and faster, but everyone is typically only doing their own thing and not sharing/making it available to everyone.
