That is good news, I hope Amobia will follow suit. Currently I am paying 9c per MB...
 
LTE

LTE low latencies could make VoIP and gaming a reality, with bandwidth like that IPTV will surely follow here in ZA.
 
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha common guys 100mbps downlink is just a theoritcal maximum depending on good radio conditions & spectrum allocation. Hsdpa has a theoritcal maximum of 14mbps & even the great NTT DoCoMo only is able to get their networks up to 7.2mbps while using their parent companys FTTN networks. lol look @ the price of datacards & usbsticks, they more expensive they a 3g phone. So you think vodacom will bring that here soon ?

Think you've pretty much got it spot-on.

It's not such a simple (or inexpensive) process to get fibre in the ground, thus the loops you see today are designed to go past the highest requirement areas. But it is then possible to T into the ring from more outlying towers. So the fibre network will grow out from the main rings.

But at some point it's either impossible or not financially viable to run fibre to a tower. So you're left with Telkom's copper network or building Microwave links. But these are very expensive again and the biggest issue is not having enough spectrum to get a decent size network rolled out.

rpm, on this topic of LTE; You might want to look at how the current spectrum allocations being done could affect the LTE networks.

That sucks. Wireless is big here because our wire infrastructure sucks but now our wireless is hitting issues cause we can't get enough wires to the base stations.

When will it all end!!?? :eek:
 
i don't see this happening anytime soon, like neotell's footprint haven't changed in the past 6months

A few things must happen before this will become a practical reality:

1) Technology must first be developed. LTE is still in beta.
2) Vendors must produce equipment upgrades.
3) Networks must undergo a software/hardware upgrade.
4) Enough back-haul must be in place to actually notice the higher speeds.

Vodacom is well know, world-wide, as an early adopter of new technologies, but practically the above 4 points must first be completed.

Any of the above points can delay the roll-out. Just look at how WiMax got hurt in points 1 & 2, for example.

And let's not start on point 4. :rolleyes:
