Let's face it, the only two cellular providers worthy of mention are Vodacom and MTN. I have been appalled with the actions of Vodacom of late, as is reflected in this thread, and now MTN have come out with some pretty fantastic new deals.
The first one worth mentioning is the Omnia on an Anytime 500 contract. R500pm, and R500 worth of airtime to do with what you please - whether they be calls, sms's, data etc; plus 50 free sms's per month. Vodacom on the other hand are charging me R430 pm for 240 free minutes - that's it. I pay in an additional R45pm for 100 discounted sms's - NOT FREE sms's.
Now, if I want to upgrade on this existing contract and stay with Vodacom, I will be forced to pay in an additional R2100 on top of my current contract price...
This is what I was told, and this is reflected on the Vodacom4me website in my upgrade section which I am overdue for. I have held back so that I could get the Omnia or HTC Diamond at a reasonable price.
This trend is reflected throughout all of the phones and packages I have been browsing so far and I demand that Vodacom change their pricing or offer me (and the rest of their clients) some damned value for money, otherwise I will be moving my business to MTN for at least the next 2 years, as I suspect many potential "upgraders" might.
Let's just recap (and I will use the Omnia as an example):
MTN: R500pm
- R500 airtime for any call type
- same/similar call rates (and I will not be sold on the call rate differences at all)
- 50 free sms's
- free phone, no pay in
Vodacom: R484.50pm
- 240 free minutes
- 100 discounted sms's - not free by a long shot
- R2100 pay in for the phone
