Facebook students to face disciplinary action

good. I hope they get to the bottom of it. Whoever did this put South Africa in a bad light.

Though I hate what they did, I ask myself, what business is it of the varsity in question? Did the guys make mention they carry out their activities on their campus? Or maybe they used the schools computers or network? If they did that I would understand.

Other than that I can't understand how a bunch of racist pricks can affect the varsity.

That's what also made me hesitate, "bringing the varsity into disrepute" can cover essentially anything, I don't see how the varsity should have control over your actions that didn't occur on campus or weren't directly connected to the varsity. Not that I'm in any way condoning their actions.

Sox, I have to say, you are the most level headed logical person here, good on ya, we need more people like you in this country

But I still think the uni should expell them, as it does reflect badly on them, remember, a university has it in their charter to discipline anyone that puts the university or its name in a bad light

+1.

They certainly have the legal right but should they? If they'd been found guilty of a crime relating to this then that'd be another matter but if they haven't? I'm not really sure what the best solution is.

afaik, wasnt the group created on campus? and only had local students as members?
To me that says the UNI has every right to shut it down and discipline those idiots.
If the UNI doesnt do it, then the government or the relevant authorities should take it over.
We cannot have idiots like that making groups such as they one they created. It spreads hatred which should not be tolerated. Racism should die and so should peoples racist mentalities.

Maybe, but anybody know they were studying at that UNI before it was mentioned in the news? If not, then it should not be a UNI matter.

I think it was cos the page came to light through the university. It was made known by other students. They blew the whistle. That brought the University into the equation. where a student lays a complaint they have to investigate and take action. Otherwise I doubt they would have bothered on their own.

Did these people claim to represent the university? If not then what does the university have to do with the whole saga. Take this to any conclusion you want - do we expel them from South Africa, from the world, from what?

Again, this is yet another molehill in a tea cup. Boring day in the press office so suddenly it becomes a university crisis. People tend to hangout because of common affiliations - that they all go to the same university isn't that unusual - but it has nothing to do with the university.

And that the university wants to pursue this - not exactly your most open minded institution is it?

Besides that - wasn't this so last month's news?

So i could start a racist group on facebook with all our companies employee's and you guys are saying the company should do nothing about it?

Wow.

The group was created on facebook and anyone could join. And it was joined by a bunch of people who hijacked it and kicked out the original numbskulls.

If there was any hate speech, there is enough legislation to deal with it. The university should stay out of it unless the university was specifically implicated.

Unfortunatley we don't know that.

Goverment can only intervene once a complaint is made a place like the Human Rights Commision or the Equality Court.

And I agree it can be tolerated, however we can't trample on people's rights becuase we don't like their viewpoints.

The university has to take action where a matter is reported by its students. They would be in the wrong if they did not act on that information. The fallout from no action would have been worse.

Wow.

You can start whatever group blows your hair back, and if everyone in the company joins it, well bully for them. What does that have to do with the company?

If the group you created implicates the company in sharing the views, then the company has issue.

I remember while at UCT students were expelled for sexual harassment, violent behavior for incidences occurring outside the university campus. Where does the university draw the line? Hopefully, these guys will have a legal representative to argue the UNW charges:

Mmope said the seven students, of 13 students initially identified, would be charged with contravening a section of the university's statute.

"The students will be charged because their conduct was detrimental or could have been detrimental to the good name, order, discipline or performance of the work of the university or any part of the university."

bull... the company has every right to act to protect their reputation.

After the debacle with those other students at the Free State, I think they are going to great lengths to avoid the damage these racist students do the name of the university. I say throw the book at them. What they did was reprehensible. How can anyone excuse that?

What rubbish - the university only has to take action where it is involved. Let's say that you are a student at some arb university. You travel to some place and after a few drinks decide to take a dump on the doorstep of the mayor's house.

You get busted - caught with your pants down, so to speak.

The fact that you go to arbuni is irrelevant and why should you be kicked out? Of course, if you are wearing an arbuni jersey and claim to be on some student initiation stunt, the story is somewhat different.
