In my neverending quest to attempt to rid myself of the reliance on sugar... And because I really, really hate the taste of artificial sweeteners...

  1. What are natural sweeteners?
  2. Do they carry the nasty aftertaste of artificial sweeteners?
  3. Where can I find them? (Jhb, Sandton area)
  4. Any nasty side-effects or health consequences that follow from using them?

Glucose from the health shop is perfectly natural afaik...

Can honey not do the trick for you Ava?

In black tea, honey is fine. In coffee and cereal, honey just ruins it. Ok, never tried it, just imagine it won't be good.
Since I only drink tea about once very 6 months, but I like coffee, honey is out.

When I lived in Germany we had sugar crystals instead of cane sugar grains. It wasn't as sweet/crude but was really en joyful.

Google searches reveal Stevia and Xylitol. I know Xylitol is used in chewing gum. Anyone tried these?

Like, rock sugar candy? Like the stuff that some coffee places give you for your tea/coffee - it's pretty much sugar crystals on a stick?

IIRC, Xylitol is he stuff which causes diarrhoea if eaten in excess. Not sure what the parameters for "excess" are though...

Ja, I use Stevia. It comes in a white 150 Ml bottle from the pharmacy. I think I got mine from Dischem.

label says "Health Connection Wholefoods"
Stevia Herbal Liquid Sweetener

made in South Africa

it goes nice in Tea, not so much in Coffee... have not tried it in baking but apparently you can. 6 drops = 1 teaspoon of sugar.

15 Kj per 100 Ml.

That's why all those sugar-free gum packs carry the warning that 'excessive consumption may lead to diarrhoea' :D

That's out, then. The reason I'm looking for alternatives is because I consume too much sugar. I think I fall in the 'excessive consumption' category. :o:(

Well glucose is a natural fruit sugar and is used by diabetics in place of sugar afaik. I could be wrong but I recall my grandfather using glucose after he was diagnosed with diabetes...

I see that Coke is planning to release soft drinks containing stevia products soon.

But... I like coffee. So that's not for me, then.

In that case, Ava, this sounds like your best bet...:D

Think it's that easy to get rid of me?

There's an alternative. But how does it taste in coffee?

I wish...:p

Not being a coffee drinker nor being a sugar/glucose addict, I can't really give you much of an answer apart from the fact that my pops was a heavy coffee drinker and used glucose in his coffee and tea. Never heard any complaints from him, and he was one helluva complainer, I can assure you...:D

Life would be so much easier if one were addicted to salad :p

Cool. I'll try that one. Let's see if we can kick the sugar dependence!
