Ye i don't understand that either cos don't the networks still make money over the data transferred. I'd still in the end use my operators sms capabilities... Menu - Messages - New - Type - Send. Alot easier than having to log into mxit first

Yes, if you have a very short term view.

MXiT and other IM services eats into SMS revenue, so (in theory) the networks should dislike them.

But that's a classic ostrich-head-in-the-sand view. Anyone who don't move with the times will soon be a dead-dodo-in-the-sand......

that's true V3G, but does the "mxit switch" with teens generate as much revenue as it used to before mxit?:confused:
 
Mxit appears to have excellent service delivery, hence their popularity. Could Mxit not teach the ruling party and all its 'deployed' officers in Government, Provincial, Municipal and the numerous other areas something about how NOT TO have poor service delivery & corruption and then try blame everything on 'apartheid' and 'the previous regime'?
 
Actually IM services like MxIT do not significantly cannibalize SMS revenue. User behavior when chatting is very different to sending SMS messages and you cannot equate one IM message to one SMS message. SMS is still used when "persistence" is required i.e. when you need to send a message that the recipient needs to keep.

I would love to run a seminar on the differences (benefits, advantages, disadvantages, etc.) between IM and SMS just so that the myths being created could be put to bed once and for all.

FYI - I see the total number of MxIT users on MTN at any given time and if I add them up by network market share I see SIGNIFICANTLY less than 12.5 million!
 
That for me is precisely the thing with MXIT... I registered on their, used it a few times.. it drove me mental so i've never been back on and as far as I'm concerned the world would be a better place WITHOUT mxit....

and i know quite a few ppl like me.. who are counted as "registered" users.. but we're never active cos mxit is irritating... and I'm trying to find a way to block mxit on my companies cellphones as well....

I don't quite agree that IM and MXiT do not cannibalise SMS, by definition it must. But I do agree it's not as big as some might think.

I share you views on the number of active MXiT users. I get a daily report as well. To get to Herman's numbers, every phone that's ever created a PDP context on all SA networks must have registered for MXiT ;)
 
if mxit lifestyle goes on like this then soon google will buy them :D

Have you ever actually gone into Voda World and asked for help loading mxit onto your phone? a friend of mine was told that mxit was "illegal":rolleyes: by the help assistant who then asked him to leave the premises :confused:

That's probably what they mean by 'Tense'
 
I did say that it didn't significantly cannabalise SMS revenue.

I've developed almost all of MTN's current SMS offerings as well as all of MTN's current GPRS offerings. I've also presented on the subject to the full board of the GSMA - I'm also on the Executive Management Committe of the GSMA and very involved in global messaging/data policy development. :cool:
