sorry Im a Mac noob :o

Im a PC pro though :D

so my gf is going back to Canada (she has a Mac with OS X ver. 10.3.9) and the new webcams need a min version of the OS, correct? like this one, needs at least 10.4.11

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/webcams/devices/4528&cl=za,en

So what I need to know is how I got about upgrading this OS to a later version? Is it possible? And can I do it myself?

thanks, much appreciated

ok so if I get my hands on a version of Mac OS... say Leopard

its a simple process of installing it or what?

like I said Im a Mac noob :o

It's very simple. Just a matter of selecting upgrade rather than a fresh install from the installation disk. Although it's better to do a fresh install, an upgrade should work fine (some people have reported problems with this). If you can backup your data I would recommend you do so, better to be safe.

according to this it'll work in 10.3. Download the macam file, double click on it, it will pop up with instructions.

Before running into Leopard: what are the specs of the machine? If it currently has panther, chances are it may lack what Leopard needs. In that instance, you'd need to track down a Tiger install disk, which may be quite (erm) difficult.

If you dont know who to ask :p

that is axactly the problem I have run into

Her machine has panther on it, and has 256MB RAM (ptth) but Leopard needs 512MB according to the Apple website so that was that out of the window...

So I had a look, and it seems that Tiger would be OK

So I "searched" online and found nothing at all... tough crowd!

Can someone hook me up? Im in the Cape Town area, and obviously Im willing to return the favour :)

HTC_guy, I wouldn't upgrade the OS on with 256MB memory if I can avoid it a tall. What machine does she have? (Click on the little apple in the top-left corner, then "about this Mac"). If it's an G3 or older G4 iBook your upgrade possibilities are limited anyway.

Check if you can make it work with macam first.

choices

yeah my PC instinct was telling me that too... kinda like upgrading a win95 system with 128MB RAM to windows 2000... not a good idea! :D

ok so Im gonna scrap the whole upgrade idea, but I need serious help with choosing a camera. I have the following camera's available to me, so I need some help matching up the ones that definitely work. forget about cost for now, can you guys help me with which ones definitely work?

apologies for the "spam" :o

I'll check tonight which one I have. I think it was a Logitech QuickCam 3000 or 4000, but I might be wrong - it's been a while since I used it.

is this an online purchase or could you physically go and fetch it?

just went to collect it, from Frontosa (computer dealer in Cape Town)

gonna try it now...

cool, thou you should have asked them to install it there, if you have access to the mac

FFS

ok so it doesnt work at all, and the joke is on me because I didnt read the compatibility list properly on the website

http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/cameras/index.php

obviously the one selling now is the later version, and needs at least ver 10.4.3 without Macam from what I can tell.

same story for these guys http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/ they also need 10.4.3, but clearly state that if you have 10.4.9 it will just work... you wont have to have there 3rd party program or Macam.

so back to the question of upgrading...

Its got a G4 1.07ghz with 256MB RAM. In light of these specs, can I upgrade to 10.4.3 ? how about 10.4.9 without this thing blowing up?

if so... I need one of these versions, can anyone here help me out with that?

1GHz+ G4 will run Tiger comfortably but I'd put in at least 512MB. Not so much because of the OS, but more because applications have ballooned in size. Web browsers, for example, can consume hundreds of MB on their own. What model mac is is?

See if you can take the cam back and source one of the ones on the compatibility list.
