Telkom rings up the charges with a little help from Icasa

Keep going Telkom, you used to just beat the VOIP providers in the past for local calls by a small margin. We will have to wait and see if after the price hike the situation still remains the same... ;)

Oh yes, it's telkom, of course, as some here have said...telkom couldn't care less, since it's the taxpayer that will keep them alive...
 
To simplify averaging out a basket of tariffs. There are 2 ways.
1. Each item carries equal clout. So the average increase is just the average of the PERCENTAGES.
2. Each item carries a weight proportional to how much of that item is sold. So the average increase is actually the average INCREASE IN REVENUE.

For example:
1. You sell 10 products. 9 go up by 1% and 1 goes up by 11%. Your average % increase is 2%. (9+11)/10
2. You sell 10 products. 9 go up by 1% and 1 goes up by 11%. But your revenue is 80% made up of the last item. Meaning that item has 4 times the clout of the other 9 item.
Your average increase in revenue will be 5.3%.
((11x4+9)/10)

I'm sure method 1 is used to convince Icasa. The problem is that telkom could sell 500 products, only increase the ones that make money and them average out the increase across 500 items.

This should be illegal. They should be required to computer generate and send with each consumers bill, a table showing "this is what you paid the last 3 months, with the new rates, this is what you would have paid."
 
Loved this article. Only wish there was a way that more could be done to fight this. With a weak regulator & an uninformed public at large, we're puppets being stringed along.
 
According to Telkom, it is barely asking for a third of the increase permitted by its licence. Its press release claims the “basket of tariffs” it bases its calculation on will result in an average increase of only 1.7%.

I am so tired of this basket rubbish that they pull every year.
 
Going back a bit now, remember when a payphone bought you 10 minutes for 20c (1990 when Telkom was still inside PT), then there was 5 minutes and 7 offpeak, then cut to 3 minutes (iirc it was because the average call was less than three minutes).

Basically what was 20c in 1990 is now R4.33, which represents an average increase of 16.5% every year for the last 20 years...

imo, call rates have largely ignored inflation and gone up in any which way the directors (with a profit motive) could justify it. I have nothing against capitalism, I have a problem with monopolistic capitalism.

I am disgusted by Hellkom

I am disgusted by telkom, they are abusing their dominant position and our alternatives are not worthy of me switching to them. The telecoms in this country sucks! We are subject to limited choice and we call ourselves a democracy... there's plenty of politicians to vote for so why not plenty of telecom providers to choose from ? .. and "international competitiveness" is NOT an argument.
 
The same 3 minute local call that now costs R1.30 on Telkom will cost you 51c on-net on Neotel, and R1.02 from Neotel to Telkom. The only way to interpret this increase is that Telkom wants you to switch. If you don't, your phone bill is going to go up like your electricity bill.
 
When is this madness going to end. Within the last 2 weeks:

-Telkom price increases
-Petrol price increases
-Electricity price increases
-Interest rate no change

Is there anything left to increase??!! :mad:
 
-food prices
-car prices
-lack of bonuses due to recession
-layoffs due to recession
-unemployment
-crime
-goverment salaries/bonusses
-load shedding

I could probably go on but people are probably crying by now...

So, what happened to ever getting free local calls? I remember how in the dialup days this was a pipe dream...
 
Read the advert in the sunday times and WOW they sure do a great job making them selfs look like the nice guy!

In other words they say government allowed 4.9% but they took only 1.7%

What kinda of sick Government is this? First they let the power increase now telecoms?Boy I know alot of people are going switch to pre-paid...Neotel better wake up its the right time guys!
 
I hope everyone realises that Telscum really doesn't give a squirt how many fingers are pointed at them, and this blatant display of it means that they're still feeling very secure and snuggly-safe in bed with the REAL criminal that's protecting them... IK@KSA!
 
What a living contradiction!
2 Days ago there was an article about government pushing for lower prices.
If i had a red button to press and it could erase the government i would push it!
