Local ADSL users warned about BitTorrent usage

Here's a thought: ferreting this kind of info out of subscriber data streams requires some kind of invasive DPI (deep packet inspection) that links (to court-standard forensics) alleged infringements to private individuals/entities. Do ADSL contracts, as they now exist, allow for that?

ISP's aren't monitoring the traffic. The Record labels and Media companies do the monitoring, by watching a Torrent trackers peer listing.

Its all automated. And its all based on keywords for the torrents that they decide to track. So a file called "What I thought of Transformers 2" will get watched, just like "Transformers 2". I've seen so many incorrect and pointless notices, its not even worth the effort entertaining them.

Most ISPs just junk the emails they receive, but for some reason IS is actually acting on them. Its a waste of resources.

Besides, just cause you use BT, does not mean you are downloading something illegal. I have PURCHASE dev related software before, where they offer BT as a means of downloading after purchase.

Internet Solutions was asked for feedback regarding the correspondence, but did not provide feedback by the time of publication.

Hardly a surprise...

i also received one those notices, if you do dl p2p be carefull from where you get it. if you get it from a doggy site that "they" control and/or have a static ip well.....

Having a static IP or not would be largely irrelevant - your ISP would still be able to correlate date/time to the IP assigned to you...

I've heard Utorrent supports encryption! But I would guess its a good idea to get torrents from reliable places, and these days to avoid anything from Pirate Bay!

Here's a question - does IS complain about all torrent usage, or just the illegal ones? If it's all torrent usage, then those who use torrents for perfectly valid purposes (such as getting their hands on Linux distros) will have a serious problem on their hands.

Maybe someone on the MyBB staff can ask?

I'm sure they log all internet activity (IIRC it's part of the new communications act - I might be mistaken here) but I doubt they spend their times sifting through the traffic logs looking to see if little Johnny downloading a CAM rip of Hannah Montannah. That's the job of Billy Ray and his leauge of greedy lawyers.

Also, thanks for the information about PeerGuardian. Do you know it also blocks adverts? (On this site too)

Anyone from Openweb got similar experiences to share?

If not, then all you WA okes should vote with your feet...

Show them the consumer is king.

I would imagine all ISPs would be obliged to pass on legal notices of this sort. If you're mate got a speeding fine driving your car, would you happily pay it?

So now how do they monitor the traffic of what you are downloading?

Is it by checking the peers?

I find this rather unsettling that they can see what you are downloading and so on...
