Local ADSL users warned about BitTorrent usage

I work for an ISP and we encourage users to download torrents, we do tell people to refrain from seeding torrents though.

Yea, i download ubuntu and all my free IDE's over torrent. It's just a better way, because of our dodgy connections that these isp's sometimes provide.
 
This happened to me a number of years back, when I was with Mweb on dialup! All it basically is is a that a complaint/message as been sent to the ISP and the ISP has sent it on to the user.

I remember there was a message something to the effect of, "Please Contact Mweb's Anti Piracy department within the next 48 hours".

All the guy said to me at Mweb was, "try not to get caught."

There are a few little programs that you can run alongside your p2p program that may help a little

The problem by not seeding is that the whole concept of P2P technology is built on the assumption that everyone will contribute as much as they receive. If no-one seed, then no-one can download... This is probably the way that organized content owners decided to battle the P2P issue.

The nice part about this article is to tell the average joe out there about the protection available. As I am not a p2p user (I tried it a few years ago and decided it is not for me), I never knew about this "protection" available.

I can see that p2p will evolve quickly in the future...

Nope.

People get warnings because they are idiots. So far every person I know of that got a warning used a public torrent site like thepiratebay.

So if people want to download from a public tracker they should at least take precaution and install something like peer guardian.

Private Trackers FTW :p
 
Yes, but Bittorrent is by invite only not so?

I just wish these guys will learn that they can never win the fight against online piracy :D. You close one door they open another. It will always happen and will continue as long as there is internet and PC's.

They should focus on making a coin or two out of it instead of spending billions to try and stop it :)

The changing nature of "My" ADSL / "My" Broadband - no longer a community forum; but an advertising platform for corporates...

Most recent articles take this approach (unless reproduced from other sources) - disappointing to say the least - objectivity has been replaced by economic interests.

Should have disclaimers on such aticles.

Not sure about IS , but all SAIX's IP's are black listed already so what they rambling on about?

Can't even send email from the IP assigned to me as they all bounce back most of the time!

But ironically IS totally IGNORE many real spam complaints from their own users / network.

NEVER ever got any reply from IS after reported spam abuse and the spam just keeps coming so they clearly don't give a sh... about more serious and pressing isues.

I worked for an ISP. I was assigned to phoning and emailing these people that we got the warning letters for, from IS. I would get a couple a week.
Just keep off public torrent sites.
There are a lot of honey pots put by those copyright people...
 
This is such a bulls hit!

I have received numerous warnings with some of my previous ISPs, along the lines of "YOU ARE USING YOUR ADSL FOR ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS"

Firstly... I use bittorrent religously (actually have a dedicated machine with dedicated ADSL line)... why? Because i am part of the ubuntu distribution movement, and I seed all the isos for others to download... how the frak is that illegal? I have had to change ISPs so often that I now have my own ISP.

And if my upstream provider even thinks about threatening me, then I'll have them in court. If you want to punish someone for ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS then get a court order and search their PC the legal way...

Ironically this was tried against sony in the late 70s early 80s when they brought out the betamax. Movie companies accused them of supplying illegal technology that facilitated piracy... Sony won that case... now they are trying to stop us from using legit technology cos some people use it fro piracy...

You wanna have a go at me sony... do your best...

BTW: Half of the IS IP are now banned from 4chan... go figure!

I disagree. The user in question's ISP is Webafrica, so it's only fitting they allow them to comment / respond, as it's important to all of us to know which ISPs are gonna have our backs in these situations.

And well done to Myadsl for researching and reporting on this issue. I happen to have read the original thread, but I could easily have missed it, in which case I woulda had no idea that this was happening.
