MacBook and iMac pricing in SA revealed

iMac 21.5” Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz (4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive)- R13,999

iMac 21.5” Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz (4GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive) – R17,499

R3500 for a extra 500GB??????

Are there other differences not listed here? If the specs are the same then their pricing sucks for the R17499 model. Can buy the first model and get a extra +-3TB capacity with the extra R3500.
 
The i7 processor model is not available locally.

Too expensive I guess.

graphics change.. from NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB to ATI Radeon HD 4670 with 256MB... hard drive 500gb to 1tb.

Just a comparison between SA prices and Hong Kong prices which u can find from store.apple.com/hk the exchange rate differences are pretty close to zero atm so here are the prices:

iMac 21.5” Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz (4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive)- R13,999 (HK$- 9388)

iMac 21.5” Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz (4GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive) – R17,499 (HK$- 11688)

iMac 27” Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz (4GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive) – R19,999 (HK$- 12988)

iMac 27” Core i5 2.66GHz (4GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive) – R23,999 (HK$- 15488)

So even with VAT one can still save quite a lot, like half the cost of a plane ticket there and back. I'd just see it as taking a discounted holiday to hk :)

Quite true... but for warranty purposes, it's better to buy locally, especially for expensive items like Macbooks.

As a foreigner living in SA. I would tend to agree. I cannot fathom why the SA prices are so much higher than overseas. A lot of these products are shipped directly from source in the far east,so no middlemen to contend with. SA duties on these products are not high.

I guess its like the cellphone providers and banks here, just excessive profitmaking!

Buy overseas...and if the product has an international warranty,then it is on warranty here too!!

Core cover the international warranty, so u dont have to buy locally for warranty on a macbook. As long as u have proof of purchase they cover it from what i understand.

Anyways, i was really keen to get an iMAC, but at these prices its not an option. Guess I will have to use my macbook for another year or so then decide.
 
The prices seem practially the exact same from when I bought my iMac earlier this year, you're actually getting more at the same price as before. I'm cross now that I bought this one :/
 
You can buy some very nice PC equipment for that price

Much cheaper than buying a Mac and loading windows on it.
 
Ag it never ends hey? Core Group at it again with inflated prices much like Vodacom...

Please note however that a better comparison is not HK but rather the UK, where prices differ much less. Also note that we are supplied by Apple Europe to my understanding, being an EMEA country (europe, middle-east & africa). So compare with UK please and you'll see it's still more here, but the difference is not that much.

Magic Mouse
Apple’s Mighty Mouse which is the first multi-touch mouse to be released for Mac products, will be available locally for R849.

Uhm, it's now called a Magic Mouse, which you state in the heading but then refer to it again as a Mighty Mouse and say it's multi-touch, which is not correct...

Just me being pedantic again, but good journalism goes a long way :)
 
I bought my macbook for R17+k about 5 years ago. It's in good shape except for the outer shell which seems to peel off in front, both side of the track pad. This has been improved with the new designs. I wonder if they will trade it in...

Loading Windows on Mac hardware and working only in that defeats the purpose of buying a Mac. If you're doing that, rather buy a high quality laptop from Panasonic, NEC or similar top quality company and keep the Windows.

Maybe you can buy some stick on protector from Ebay or somewhere and cover it up. Trade-in price will prolly suck unless you sell it off privately.
 
The article's got the Harddrive size wrong on the new white Macbook. It should be 250GB, not 160GB.
 
For R24k, that Imac better have crossfired 5870's. Putting together a PC with the same specs wont even cost half as much.

Being generous on the prices:

i5 2.66Ghz R2000
4GB DDR3 R1000
1TB hard drive R1000
Motherboard R2000
PSU R600
Keyboard+Mouse R500
HD4670 R1000
DVD drive R300
27" Full HD screen R3500

Total cost: R11900

I dont think a HD4670 will perform too well at 1920x1080 too ;)
