MTN launches OneRate at 3.1 cents per second

Is that per second from the very first second?

EDIT: Looks like it is per second from the first second

So now what about contract and topup subscribers still paying R2.30 per minute on Anytime?

R1.86 a minute doesnt seem that cheap, anyways with MTN no one can even makes calls, no signal, no service, connection error, Why bother.

Everything you said, plus MTN's marketing babble makes it sound like their competing with their own packages, and not packages of other providers

I agree wholeheartedly that the price isn't that cheap, however I've only ever had issues with MTNs (lack of) customer service.
I've had way more connection issues, no signal, disconnects, connection errors etc with Vodacom than with MTN.
I still have 2 phones, one on each network and still experience the same as I have for the last 10 years, i.e. MTNs network appears way better from a GSM perspective, I can't comment on their data network.

My contract is expiring soon. Now if only they allowed you drop down to prepaid from contract...

You can................

You can................

a little too late i would say though.

Call 808 and inform them of your intentions.

However cell-C is offering R1-50 for Voice Calls anytime - any network.

Cell-C is good for Voice and SMS as they roam on Vodacom's network outside their Coverage areas. 100% Coverage in SA. Data is Terrible but works.

Talk is that Cell-C is looking to partner with Telkom for the roll-out of new towers in Rural areas ( Will have to wait and see on that ) -
This is a Rumour

Cell-C has very few billing issues on their prepaid offerings.

Rumour has it that all new rural towers will carry both Cell-C and Telkom-Mobile antennae ONLY. I believe this is a deliberate move against the Giants.

;)Lets wait and see what pans out...........................

MTN One Rate at R1.86 per minute, at true per second billing, is definitely a very good prepaid rate. In fact I believe it is the best rate on prepaid at the moment.

Cell C's Easy Chat All Day is charged per minute , at R1.50 per minute

Virgin Mobile's 99ers deal works as follows:

Virgin Mobile’s new ‘best value’ prepaid rate of R1.99 per minute for the first five minutes of use in a day, dropping to 99 cents per minute for the remainder of the day....

So MTN's rate of R1.86 is definitely the cheapest. True per second billing, from the first second, to all networks. One rate, all day. No rocket science involved, no having to jump through hoops, or monitor network usage to save. I just call when I need to. And one free SMS per day is better than nothing - it'll save me about R15.00 per month on SMSs (R0.50 x 30). Finally MTN are listening, and trying to do something good. I like :D Just hope they don't mess this up.

Can't wait to see how Vodacom will respond to this.

Exactly. Vodacom can't even compare. Their cheapest peak tarri plan is R1.99 per minute during peak time. I think its per second plus.

Seriously cellc is the cheapest. But per minute billing which means if you get voice mail and hangup - R1.50 where with mtn it would only be 3.1c whic is somewhat better!

Seems that NOT one of the Networks offer a perfect or close to perfect plan for any 1!

FAIL :)

Would it have been that hard for the reported to convert all the costs to per minute to give an easy comparison?

I don't think the article was meant as a comparison of the best rates from each network, but rather to announce the MTN One rate package.

That said, it would be nice to get a follow up article that actually does perform the comparison of the best packages from each operator, and present the infomation in a nice tabular format...

Staff Writer - hope you're reading this...

Sure - but it just would have been good practise. MTN clearly wants to convey a certain impression by marketing the package with its per second cost, and Staff Writer walked straight into the trap.
