Digital TV in SA may be delayed

Didn't one of those jokers recently claim that it won't be delayed?

Also, note the uber sketchy calculations.

Unsubsidized price: R750
Subsidized price: R300
Money set aside: R400 mil
Poor households to get subsidies: 5 mil

That leaves a R 1,85 billion hole in their calcs. :erm::rolleyes:

Currently no televisions on the South African market feature a digital tuner;
Pretty sure the article is wrong on this. Don't the big flatscreens have digital tuners incorporated?

Kantor confirmed that the DoC is currently targeting a price of R750 for each set top box. According to Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda R400-million has been set aside to subsidise these devices for roughly 5-million poor households.
So me with my old tech R500 worth TV has to buy the set top box and someone in a shack with a 40 inch Plasma or LCD can get it subsidized.

Anyway stilll want to know how poor housholds will be quanitified.
If you are unemployed or earning a pittance the last thing you should be doing is wasting your time watching TV.

Lets hope the subsidized people have to provide proof of paid up tv licence before they qualify :-)

really .. how is this even possible, thought we would have no problems at all hitting the deadline ... oh wait ... thats not right ...

Now I remember ... oops .. nothing to see here .. move along .. nothing to see .. business as usual. .. clowns

Wasn't there a move recently to propose to scrap tv licences and rather include it in tax. So it wouldn't matter if you have/don't have a licence, the earners are subsidising the unemployed. That way unemployed can have the priveleges of "legitimitely" watching tv through subsidised tv licence and set top box.

I wonder if the new uk tvs with the freeview tuner built-in will be able to catch the digital signal, and if they would ever be sold in SA at a reasonable price?

Instead of set top box get an old dstv decoder and a cheap dish install. For R25/month dstv easyview bouquet has SABC and etv + al jazeera and 1 or 2 more channels satellite digital broadcast already. In those months you actually have time/money to watch you can always switch bouquets.

Maybe the delay is because the residents in Craighall Park have realised they can get more compensation from the guavament than from iBurst. So now they are takeing the guavament to court because some teanage kid in the area now has a more acne than last year.
