Maybe it's a good thing that Telkodemonopolies is so inept & incompetent & idiotic & exorbitantly priced.

Consumers will start to ignore Telkodemonopolies as a viable option for the future and rather deal with the monopolistic beast's wireless broadband competitors - and one or more of those has to start offering a decent wired ADSL2+ 24Mbits/s service by circa 2010 - maybe even FTTC|FTTH, there is even potential here for kick-starting LLU.

Another classic example of Telkodemonopolies having its head so incredibly far up its arse that it cannot see how **** its future looks.

Well, it looks like Neotel has a real shot here.

The Telkom CEO pointed out that they are on target to reach 420 000 ADSL users by March 2008. This growth is helped along by the ADSL self-install option which was used by 59% of all new ADSL customers.

Translation: We decided to let the customers install their own freaking routers cos we laid off too many people when Sizwe Nxasana was [-]chief pillager[/-] CEO. The [-]smoke blowing dept[/-] marketing geniuses then decided to spin it as an installation option.

Converged services

Telkom is planning fully converged services where the current stand alone access, voice and Internet value propositions will make way for ‘integrated communication and entertainment’ services.

Translation: We now plan to shaft our customers even more for providing the same crappy service because our precious earnings per share dropped by 15% due to a small blip on the competition radar... oh and we had to upgrade the network for those whining customers.

No, its not a quality problem, rather distance. Speeds of 10Mbps+ require < 2000m LL (20Mbps+ < 1000m), however the average is higher. Only way to shorten the distance is to move DSLAMs from exchange to street curb (FTTC) using something like this ... http://www.huawei.com/products/access_network/dslam/outdoor_dslam.do?card=1

LLU must be done by 2011, so does this mean the entire network must be upgraded by then?

LLU is about utilising the existing copper in the ground. If other providers could afford to lay their own copper/fiber, there would be no need to unbundle the current stuff.

Here's where I think Neotel may nuke Telkom... supply 24Mbs+ via fibre to home. (or am I dreaming?)

I dont believe they have enough money ... Neotel total investment over 5 years = R 11Bil, Telkom investment for NGN network upgrade alone = R 30Bil.

Just start counting how many Telkom street curb boxes there are (just in areas that would require / can afford DSL) and extrapolate country-wide. This is some serious "big kahuna" investment and with a relatively small market and downward pressure on pricing, there is little guarantee of resonable return. Wireless (e.g. CDMA2000 & WiMAX) is a much cheaper/safer bet for them at the moment.

In NZ: 20GB, download 10 Mbps / upload 2 Mbps, about $70 per month is what i have. 1G packs at $2.95 per pack once you reach your 20GB, and they kick in automatically. Its great. Using skype video is such a pleasure.

But on my mobile, we pay about $15 per MB of data. Vodafone rippoff!!!!!! And I remember in SA complaining about R2 per MB. So although NZ is way ahead with broadband, they are way behind in the mobile space.

If we only getting 10mbps by 2011 what are the rest of the world going to be on like something crazy? Neotel are getting there with their new cable that they laying but everything is happening 2 slowly and overseas they are moving way faster than us.

Well the fastest they supposedly have now is the 4 Mbps line... broadcasting HD over that is no problem in black and white!!

As the white bit isn't PC, only black will be broadcast.
