10 Mbps ADSL by 2011

A reflection of the naivety of our gov.

For 7 years they allowed SBC & MT to profit gouge R 15B at the expense of investing in infrastructure to keep up with technology evolution & customer demands.

Now we have to pay the price, our average local loop runs are too long to support technologies such as ADSL2+ effectively. It will take Telkom a few years to complete what they should've done those many years ago.
 
By 2011 Telkom will no longer control the local loop? If they still intend to offer ADSL they will having to match the speeds of both their wired and wireless competition, surely?

How are Tekom Media going to operate HDTV broadcasts over ADSL2+ if the Telkom are only aiming for 10Mb/s by 2011?

These questions and others will no doubt be revealed in future gripping installments of isiTelko, the Greed.

Not as far as I understand.

LLU is about the legal framework and mechanisms by which others can gain fair access to the copper in the ground. I'm unsure whether any specification will be made as to how this copper should look?

Well the fastest they supposedly have now is the 4 Mbps line... broadcasting HD over that is no problem in black and white!!

That's what I want to know. Seems like a nice grey area that Telkom thrive's on.

Does the existing copper network allow for 10Mbs connections?

LLU must be done by 2011, so does this mean the entire network must be upgraded by then? If so then why go copper??? Fibre anyone?

Here's where I think Neotel may nuke Telkom... supply 24Mbs+ via fibre to home. (or am I dreaming?)
 
Once again we are shown why this continent is so f-ed up. Just open the effen Telco. market for everybody, allow private enterprise to lay cables, etc. We can have this speed next year.
 
By 2011 the average connection is gonna be 100Mb-1Gb/s. And hopefully Telkom will be extinct by then.
 
Im sorry, but thats not good enough telkom. By 2011? Hell, do they know by then their competition will be ahead of them?
And lets not even forget that most people cant even get 4Mb lines yet and one hardly ever reaches those speeds in South Africa anyhow.

Its just more hot air marketing from telkom to hopefully increase their falling share prices.
 
I just worked it out. With our current 3 gig international cap which is a norm in south africa, and with the new speeds promised by telkom by the time my kids are in college (they arent born yet) a person can finish their cap in 90 minutes. Ok, 90 minutes of Broadcast HD TV, sweet, then what?
 
who cares about the speed when u get 3GB! I mean we should forget about this speed issue and push bigger caps more!

What can one do with 4meg lines????? But with 3GB u watch youtube for a afternoon and its all gone....

90 mins = 1 movie! Then Telkom will say "see, our Do Broadband advertising is true. You may now download 1 movie per month, but no music pls. ...and stay away from joost.com, it's just plain abuse)

I remember reading earlier this year that Telkom's recent upgrade will allow faster speeds but that it will be throttled to 4Mbps to allow IPTV ect. on the rest of the bandwith. But 11Mbps by 2011. By then Cellular will be running close to 100Mbps I'm sure.
 
Telkom - you will just have to do better than that!. 10Mbs should have been here LONG ago, 10Mbs only in 2011 will be like having dialup by then!. Pathetic!. howabout 24Mbs Average uncapped!.
 
Maybe it's a good thing that Telkodemonopolies is so inept & incompetent & idiotic & exorbitantly priced.

Consumers will start to ignore Telkodemonopolies as a viable option for the future and rather deal with the monopolistic beast's wireless broadband competitors - and one or more of those has to start offering a decent wired ADSL2+ 24Mbits/s service by circa 2010 - maybe even FTTC|FTTH - there is potential here for kick-starting LLU.

Another classic example of Telkodemonopolies having its head so incredibly far up its arse that it cannot see how **** its future looks.
 
4 years for 7 Mbps faster? That's pathetic. I guess these 4 Mbps trials will go on for another 2 years at least.
