100% of Telkom exchanges ADSL enabled

I'm sorry, but it's disgusting that you put this bit of pro-Telkom propaganda when there are so many customers who are still just being told by Telkom "no ports available" at their exchanges, with no ETA's on when they plan to fix this problem. I literally just got off the phone with them listening to their useless "there are still no ports available, we re-evaluate from time to time" blah blah. THERE IS NOT 100% COVERAGE by any stretch of the English language --- "coverage" means "available". It's not available if there are no ports. And these are not far-out rural areas, we're talking about major suburbs in major cities like Cape Town and Joburg, where some have been hearing this story for over a year. How dare Telkom - and MyBB - print such blatant lies unquestioningly.

Know a few folks who would claim this is bull**** as they can't get adsl in their area.

Yeah, I can't either.

This is what they saying:

All their exchanges are ADSL enabled!

Whats difficult about that?

Correct, as they are not saying that all SUBURBS or TOWNS are ADSL enabled, as there might not be exchanges in said suburbs or towns.

They are also not saying that they have a backlog of ADSL ports at certain exchanges hence it is enabled, just not available!!

This is a very deceptive statement!!!

While the exchanges may well be ADSL enabled, many subscribers cannot get ADSL due to the access technology used in their area.

For example: the Somerset East exchange is ADSL enabled, but a farmer being serviced off this exchange cannot get ADSL as he is being fed via SOR18 technology!!!

"The SOR18 Rural Telephony System was designed in the 70's to provide normal telephone services to users who are traditionally serviced over the old open wire (party line) routes on farms and other rural areas. The SOR18 system enabled Telkom to provide 18 telephone lines over a single open wire route covering distances exceeding 350km."

The problem is not necessarily the access technology being used. If the physical line length exceeds 5.5km you probably won't be able to get ADSL on that line, no matter what technology is used.

So even if Telkom were using something that supports ADSL to serve the farmers if the line is too long you're still out of luck.

This is all very interesting. I am currently with Telkom on a 384Kbps connection. I have just today phoned them and upgraded my speed to 4Mbps. They say that all the work in getting their exchanges ADSL capable, etc. is because of the imminent 8/10Mbps upgrades... After completing my upgrade over the phone, I asked the Telkom call centre agent when the "imminent speed upgrades" would happen - she knew nothing about any speed upgrades. She asked a fellow call centre agent - nothing. They know NOTHING about any speed upgrades. She kept going on about Telkom have just increased their Cap sizes. I said that I am aware of that, but I am talking about the speed upgrades - silence, then: "I am sorry sir, but we have been told nothing about any speed upgrades". Can you believe it? The biggest ADSL (Telkom) speed upgrade ever and their very own call-centre staff are blissfully unaware of any such thing. I may as well have been speaking Greek to a fish. I wanted to know if my exchange (Tableview, Cape Town) would or does support the new 8/10Mbps speeds. No joy. "I am sorry sir, but we can't help you".

I spent the rest of the day quietly sitting in a corner, pulling out my pubic hairs with a pair of tweezers and found it to be a far less painful experience...

Good for Telkom .. maybe now that their whole world is ADSL enabled they can 1) start to upgrade the exchanges that are oversubscribed and 2) start sorting out the lines that cannot sync at 4meg.
Kthxbi

may be this is why I can't get ADSl in my area "no ports" and "no infrastructure"--ETA 29 Jan 2011!

i-d-i-o-t-s!

Lol, dont be so naive. Ofcourse they know. Do you think that their systems (and by systems I mean their computer systems) havent been upgraded to include the new profiles? Ofcourse it has. Everything is ready for implementation. They just need the go ahead from the big monkeys. They will tell u that they know nothing about it, but it's all lies :)

BS... unless Telkom has been using the building behind my house for the last +20yrs for advertising...

Well Telkom's call center agents are not the cream of the crop. Not only don't they know the products but they also don't have any common sense. I want to replay my legendary conversation I had (way back when when everybody was using dial-up):

Agent: Sir - would you be interested in Telkom Internet? It costs R75 per month and you would save a lot of money.
Me: Sorry no - I am currently with @lantic and pay R65 per month, so I won't be saving any money.
Agent: No sir, if you switch to us you will save money, because it only costs R75 per month.
Me: Uhm.. no I am with @lantic, they charge me R65 per month, which is less than the R75 you are quoting me now.
Agent: With Telkom Internet you will save money, it costs less than other ISP's.
Me: I am not interested at the moment - I would like report a line fault...

It's even worse now as they use contract workers from labour brokers in the call centres!!!

based on what do they claim to have 100%? most ppl seem to confirm they dont even have all the exchanges in cities covered, nevermind in small towns and rural areas??

u sure this is not someone daydreaming or living in a fantasy world?
