why waste your time with ADSL CELL C 3G is coming works out cheaper
 
Im in Kimberley, i have been applying for Adsl since 2 years back. And every now and then my application was turned down due to the non adsl availability. So Telkom stop talking BS.
 
I have to add my piece here, also applied for ADSL over 2 years ago, I phone every month to follow up. Every month I am told that my exchange does not support ADSL and that are no plans to upgrade it to do so. They told me this 4 days ago at the end of July. I live 10 meters from the exchange and every time I see a Telkom van there or the cabling company and even the air conditioning company that they contract out to, I go out and chat to the techs. Every time, they all say, no, they are not working on the ADSL.

If you are wondering, I can see the exchange from my office window where I work all day, every day.

I cannot believe that they have made such a blatant lie. Probably publish another statement soon that states that all 100% exchanges that have can support ADSL have been enabled. That would give them the spinhole to duck out of this.

What exchange is that?

We should start naming them so that RPM can have a list to challenge Telkom with!
 
Just a small point: as I read it Telkom say all exchanges are DSL enabled. That does not necessarily mean that DSL is fully implemented from the exchange to users, nor even that there's enough DSLAM capacity to service all demand.

This is not of course what long-waiting applicants want to hear.

IMO this is another example of poor internal-external communications coordination (NPI*) ... Pure speculation, but this is what I suspect happens: at 15h23 one Thursday the DSL Backbone Installation Technical Team plugging cables and boxes and loading software reach a significant milestone in bringing DSL capability to all exchanges. Their boss tells his manager who tells his manager who tells her manager who tells The Board they've at last got all the exchanges hooked in; The Board says "What an achievement! This is a milestone! Get the PR Dept to issue a Press Release!". PR Dept, staffed by non-techies, write up something and tell the world, and it ends up at MyBB, where disgruntled users say "so why can't I get DSL??!!".

Can you see how this goes all wrong? The Press Release was not end-user/Joe Sixpack oriented; this milestone is important for telco's, just like it was news when all our exchanges became digital in the looong migration from the old electro-mechanical PSTEs. But of course most users are not concerned about infrastructural implementation milestones, only how fast and at what price they can get a service.

I post this only in the name of fairness. I am not a Telkom employee, supplier, shareholder or in any way connected with Telkom other than via a cable, through which this post reaches your desktop.

Lastly, for those wondering why farmers and ma-plotters can't get DSL: there are severe technical limitations as to how far DSL can be pushed down a twisted pair.

I agree moggie, on another 2 rural towns in the Karoo who have no ADSL
and will not get for a few years, not talking about the rural areas around these towns
where cellphone coverage is also very poor, low population densities

WOW still SOR18, I remember Quality Controlling that kit in 1988 when I was based at STC
Boksburg where the SOR18 was manufactured certainly an update from the old SOX & SOJ
open wire carrier systems that preceeded SOR18

Why dont you goto to all your neighbours and collect at least 20 filled in application forms, that should
put them on the list. I see a remote area called Rondevlei, between Sedgefield & Wilderness
did that and they got a DSLAM

The Telkom exchange here is within a 10km radius of most of the residential areas in the village. The exchange itself is 22km from the nearest ADSL exchange in another town.

It still begs the question: why make such a public statement when it is blatantly not true? Are there any retractions or rephrasing? I have not seen any.

Ditto - some outlying areas use wireless linkup to the exchange, so just because you have a telkom line does not mean you can have ADSL.
 
We have a winner... now please explain why I am SO FAR AWAY from the exchange that I can't get more than a 512kb line?

Maybe you shouldn't be patting yourself on the back so quickly and make a decision to install more exchanges, especially in an area serving thousands and thousands of people? Upgrading x amount of switches installed 15 years ago is not an achievement!

How about exceedingly high attenuation and very low SNR on a 384k line? Yet they won't release the last mile and insist I use THEIR exchange almost 1.5kms away?
