Not worth the cost. Theoretically you'll hit the cap in 6.8 hours if you download at full speed. Don't bother uploading at the same time!

Here the calculations for perusal. Note: this is only downloading, if you upload at the same time your cap will probably be exceeded in 4 hours or less.

Cap: 3GB * 1024 = 3072 MB * 1024 = 3145728 KB
Downstream transfer (ONLY): 1Mbps = 1024 Kbps / 8 = 128 KBps

Time to hit cap: 3145728 KB / 128 KBps = 24576 s / 60 = 409.6 mins / 60 = 6.83 hours


Edit: Sorry I'm using broadband for what it was created, not just web browsing and email (if this was the case I'd go back to dial-up)

The best way to look at it is this..

3GB is 3GB regardless of the speed.. If you want to browse, download (not all the content on the internet in 1 night), and retrieve mail at a faster speed, then it won't matter if it takes 3 minutes or 30 days to reach 3GB, it is 3GB after all.

If you actually took the time to calculate how long it would take to reach the cap, you might be as Telkom calls it.. an ABUSER..

We have browsing for about 6 clients going over ADSL including mail and we have not hit the 3GB this month.. 2 are 64k diginet, 4 are ethernet..

pre GB billing: R680 (ADSL line) + R90 (phone line) + R299 (SAOL 30GB) = R1070 ($164/mo)

post GB billing: R680 (ADSL line) + R90 (phone line) + R2000 (30GB) = R2770 ($426/mo)

RIDICULOUS ON BOTH COUNTS. Yeah, tell your buddies on IRC and they'll be shocked for sure!


Can get 3Mbps for $30 in the US and probably less in UK

Well, there's libraries, the swimming pool, brown-nosing the Boss, looking at girls, playing offline games, doing window shopping, watching DVD's, going to work, listening at the wife yakking on the phone , looking at the neighbour's daughter next door, chasing that pesky cat from your yard, cleaning up your room, typing in a long letter to ICASA regarding How Stupid This Pooty 3Gb Cap Is, trying to get a better score in Unreal Tournament against 8 bots, trying to translate the book The Lord of the Rings in Afrikaans the list can go on and on...

...but if you want to watch pr0n, then you're out of luck when capped.

The problem with this is that it's still 256k UL ... so it will not improve peer connections, only for big downloads.

I agree.. but my point was that 3GB can go a long way unless you are a heavy downloader..

We have several clients that use about half their available BW 24x7x365 downloading anything they can find on the web..

Well, I'm upgrading to DSL1024 for sure. It's the same cost as I'd been paying since before Telkom's DSL512 price drop. Plus DSL1024 will kick iBurst's ass till kingdom come...

Okay, I just have to say this: Just because you have a faster connection, you DON'T HAVE TO MAX IT OUT 24/7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You don't need to go and download movies and games during every minute of the day. To the </telkomterms on>normal</terlkomterms off> user, 3GB will still be enough, it just means whatever they did originally they can do faster - not that they have to download/upload more...

1) Originally, I remember reading that 1024k ADSL was only going to be offered as a residential service IF there was a demand for it?!?!?!
2) I notice now that on Telkom's website in the ADSL section they give a bunch of links of where to download/stream music and movies, as well as online-games... And they still say ADSL isn't intended for anything other then Email and Browsing

Guess even telkom couldnt figure out why it was only being introduced to businesses.

On the contrary Dovi - recent ad campaigns from Telkom specifically mention downloading music and movies (amongst other things).

This is what infuriates me the most about the pontificators who stand on their soap boxes preaching about abusing the service. FFS its clearly designed for the purpose - more to the point its sanctioned by Telkom. That Telkom is introducing a faster (1mbs) service only serves to highlight that they have the capability to support the higher speeds.

When I spoke to the Telkom ppl today they didnt even know about it. Upgrading is usually free (or has been in the past - downgrading is what they charge you for.

Hm, I think the reason why they are now attempting to promote downloading of video, audio, and other rich media, is because they wish to promote the mindset that a lot of usage is its intention... 3 guesses as to the reason for the change (*cough* per GB billing *cough*). The content is there, and now they're going to make money off of that content indirectly - which they couldn't/didn't do in the past.
