Hi

I upgraded my line to 10mb from 4mb on Friday, my exchange can apparently support 20mbit and on paper so can my line stats but I'm wondering what happens once you have applied. My lines with afrihost and my 4mb to 10mb upgrade took a few hours (I dont know if the affects things) but my question is this.

I am not sure what happens when it comes to "flicking the switch" so to speak as I've read people moving up on the ADSL2+ profile to test the line before VDSL, some going straight to VDSL etc... It's kind of pointless buying a VDSL modem if you end up getting your 20mb with a ADSL2+ profile or if your line cant handle it after all.

Really just need to know what to mention or expect.

All will depend on what equipment you are connected to at the Telkom exchange.

For 20Mbps ADSL:

IMAX = quick and easy as it is ADSL+ enabled

DSLAM = depends on which type of unit you are connected to, as very few can handle 20Mbps. If there is such an unit in your exchange then a techie will have to physically re-jumper your connection. So it won't be quick and easy.

For VDSL a techie will perform a line test before giving the go-ahead for a 20Mbps connection.

Thanks MickeyD

As soon as I got 10mb I switched my router from Auto to ADSL2+ and its syncing happily on Adsl2+ (The figures also match as its 10239/1021), it seems that the Adsl2+ syncs are not in multiples of 1024 (From what I've read). Telkom also installed something new within the last 6 months as my attentuation dropped from 55 (+-4km) to 17, switching from 4mbit to 10mbit didnt even alter my downstream SNR (Well its actually gone up since I last checked)

Hopefully an IMAX

You mean, hopefully a MSAN? :p

PS. Be specific as to whether you want 20Mbps ADSL or VDSL.

VDSL will require a new modem/router.

Please remember to verify your line after it is working(vdsl syncing) , or your vdsl line wont dail your accounts.

Had to do this for client with 10mps to 40mps upgrade.

Your line might be stuck on 15mps also if you don't verify it.

When I tried to order VDSL (upgrade from 4mbps ADSL), I got many conflicting view on how the process works from different Telkom people. From what I gathered, this is what is supposed to happen:

1. You order VDSL.
2. Within 72 hours, a technician tests whether your line really supports VDSL.
3. This upgrade is done.

The Telkom sales person I spoke to told me that for the upgrade to be done, a Telkom technician has to come out to your house, with about a R700 installation fee. However, several other people told me this is not true, and you can do the installation/upgrade yourself.

In my case, my line stopped synchronizing soon after I placed an order for the upgrade. I could never get any good feedback on the progress for the order, or why it stopped synchronizing. Also never got feedback on whether or not my line would support VDSL. Eventually I cancelled the order, and a day later the line was fixed.

If you order the line, note that Telkom has a 7-day return policy on any routers you purchase from them in-store. You could use this to test the line from your side. I still recommend you wait until they confirmed the line does support VDSL though.

Thanks hereticangel.

@MickeyD , doubt its a MSAN, I drive past the exchange on my way home and it isn't the hulking beast that a MSAN is.

I'm hoping for ADSL2+ since then I dont need to go out and buy a new router and no downtime. (Definately not going to buy a VDSL modem/router until I know if I need it or not).

They have installed MSANs in the exchange buildings as well. It replaces the old electronic switch (exchange).

Ok so all of a sudden I am syncing at 15mbit, does this mean its time to move over to a VDSL modem or is something wrong ?

Apparently I can now get VDSL. An MSAN is about 1.2km away from my access point, but I'm not sure if I will be able to upgrade at all:

DSP Firmware Version E.25.41.55 A
Connected true
Operational Mode G.Dmt.BisPlus
Annex Type AnnexA
Upstream 903800
Downstream 10235900
SNR Margin(Upstream) 6.0 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 9.10 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 15.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 41.0 dB
CRC Errors(Upstream) 0
CRC Errors(Downstream) 0
Latency(Upstream) Fast
Latency(Downstream) Fast

Does VDSL travel better in short distances? I want dat VDSL man. The Telkom checker says my max is 20Mb.

EDIT: that must mean I'm still on ADSL2+ :( I wonder why I'm not on this new box yet.

Uhm Wait :D

Are you telling me that I could sync 15Mbps on ADSL2+ if I ordered a 20Mbps Line? I always thought it wouldnt sync due to the incompatible modulation? :P If I'm wrong, please say - because my area recently put infrastructure in place for 20Mbps, and due to the high cost of a VDSL modem, I have been unable to utilize it :D

You won't see it without a VDSL enabled modem/router.

Remember that MSAN stands for "multi-service access node" so it supplies (onder andere) DSL of any type and fibre if you have FTTH.

So could my stats be better under VDSL? Right now I imagine I won't be able to sync any further than 12-13Mb with the current ones in ADSL2+...

EDIT: I also imagine that the max 20Mb of my number means I am only allowed ADSL2+ right now (20Mb ADSL2+ sync profile and all that).

I contacted afrihost and got told that 15mbps was the highest stable speed they could get.

basically stats are...

Link Down: 15359 Kbps
Attentuation Down: 17.5 dB
Noise Margin Down: 11.8 dB

Link Up: 1257 Kbps
Attenuation Up: 10.3 dB
Noise Margin Up: 8.4 dB

My SNR dropped by about 4 from 10 to 15, didnt change at all from 4-10. So I guess 15's my limit.

On the afrihost control panel I'm on the VDSL package with a (Up to 20 mbps) next to it.

I am not using VDSL, Adsl2+

A 5mbit increase is still worth the extra R100 that the 20 mbps service costs
