10mb -> 20mb, upgrade procedure ?

Aah I see :) I just don't have the extra money to buy a VDSL Modem right now :D they're like R1000 for the cheapest ones hahaha

Z

order mweb 5gb capped , cancel it should be total of R160 or so.
They give you a free vdsl modem.

They say they going to collect it if you cancel etc , they never collected mine :P ( and few other people i know of)

Only reason i don't use my vdsl modem is because it does a reboot each time you switch adsl accounts , and i switch twice a day from fnb to afterfhours uncapped , so became a pain to wait for internet :P

*cough* Very Good Plan *cough*

:D

Why Don't you just setup a PPPOE Pass-Through? I do that with my server :)

Also - if you aren't using it - ill be happy to buy it from you :D

Yeah was thinking to use in bridge mode , and use my netgear wan router to dail , just to lazy to set it up :p

Btw it does not support half-bridge mode.

Hahaha, I see :D

Line was just upgraded to 20Mbps (still running over ADSL2+ - so it's not syncing correctly)

Still much better than the usual 8Mbps :D

Hi

I upgraded my line to 10mb from 4mb on Friday, my exchange can apparently support 20mbit and on paper so can my line stats but I'm wondering what happens once you have applied. My lines with afrihost and my 4mb to 10mb upgrade took a few hours (I dont know if the affects things) but my question is this.

I am not sure what happens when it comes to "flicking the switch" so to speak as I've read people moving up on the ADSL2+ profile to test the line before VDSL, some going straight to VDSL etc... It's kind of pointless buying a VDSL modem if you end up getting your 20mb with a ADSL2+ profile or if your line cant handle it after all.

Really just need to know what to mention or expect.

I went trough this whole procedure and can describe exactly how it works.

First you check on the site and they inform you that you can get 20 mb's.
Next you phone them and they inform you that you are definitely able to get 20 mb's and ask them to activate it. They let you know this will take 72 hours. Then you go ahead and get a VDSL router and wait about a week with no response, then one day you get home and your internet is down then you phone them and they tell you to do a dsl activation online. After this they will sync you down to 4 mb and when you phone them they will tell you that you are not able to get 20 mb's in your area.

See nice and simple

Probably your account that is capped at 10Mb. 20Mb over ADSL2+ works fine.

So Telkom moved me to 20Mbps and line syncs at 20 (ADSL2+) but I can't get speeds faster than 10Mb. Tried with a free Afrihost 1Gb account and FNB Connect. Do you think this is an issue on Telkoms side. Doesn't look like my exchange is congested either

Try with a WebAfrica account.

Try with a WebAfrica account.

WebAfrica don't offer free 20Mb (VDSL) accounts. Already checked with them. Just tried with an Axxess account and same issue. I should probably just give Telkom a call in the morning

Last Result:
Download Speed: 9896 kbps (1237 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 842 kbps (105.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 36 ms

I was talking about their free 1GB accounts, they will run at full speed no matter what line speed you have.

Telkom refreshed the port and the problem is fixed

Exact the same problem. My line was upgraded. I sync at 20 but can not get higher speed then 10. What did you do, just asked telkom to reset the port for you. Is that right?

Hi Zertop and bavmorda

When speaking to Telkom, did you specifically ask for 20 mbps ADSL and they understood you without explanation or did you have to elaborate? Would like to order the same service as I am 300m away from my local MSAN, but would likely be more than happy with 20 mbps ADSL2+ for a little bit more a month.

So I tried following the thread but there are so many conflicting opinions...I just want to ask if I can get 14 megs speed if I upgrade to 20megs not VDSl, but rather ADSL2+. Here are my stats :)

So can I?

I actually went through Afrihost. But yes, I said please don't switch me over to VDSL Modulation - rather keep me on ADSL2+. They said fine, however it seems I was just switched over by telkoms automated system -_-.

Oh well. Telkom's no help. The tech support people over there keep transferring me to sales to downgrade - which I don't want to do (even when I tell them not to). :(

The Telkom support staff are at the moment a little clueless about the 20Mb ADSL offering, but if you get through to a very helpful member of staff they will investigate for you while you're on the line and confirm whether it is or isn't available in your location. They're currently under the impression that 20Mb is only available on VDSL so you'll have to insist on them checking for you.

The only thing that annoys me, is that I'm perfectly fine with this stuff happening (as I mean, I am trying to beat the system), but they shouldn't transfer my line on a Friday evening and then be offline for the rest of the weekend so I'm stuck with no internet... It was working fine on an ADSL2+ 15Mbps sync, up until 2am this morning?

Oh well. I'll just have to sort it out :/

Z :)
