hey guys.
last night while playing left 4 dead my pc just went off, thinking it was a surge or something, i just switched my pc back on, played again for 10 minutes and then- it switched off again. opened up speedfan and it said everything is fine. used expertool to see my gpu's temp and it was fine, booted up in the bios and saw my cpu running at 120.... so i opened up my case, took out the cpu, wiped off the old thermal paste, cleaned the cpu heat sink and fan, put everthing back, booted up into the bios, 38 degrees.... great. but on the post screen it shows my q6600 2.4ghz is only 1.59ghz and as soon as windows vista boots onto desktop, i can only move my mouse. clicking on anything freezes the computer. safemode the same.

Is my cpu fried or something else???????? :( :(

thanks...

Sounds like you bent a pin putting the CPU back, or while cleaning it, or something like that.
BIOS is picking up the chip "model" incorrectly.

Sounds like your CPU is throttling the clockspeed down due to overheating.

The fact that everything freezes makes me think that the CPU is buggered. Try boot a Linux live CD and see what happens?

Q6600's dont have any pins to bend.

What Heatsink are you using? stock?
Is it making full contact?

The CPU cant be fried if the PC still boots. Its either broken, or it works.

The CPU doesnt but the board does ! recheck everything, turn off EIS or whatever else it is called (energy saving that throttles the CPU down while idling) in the bios. Reboot and run some diagnostics. 120C is only about 80% :eek:to hot !!! probably cooked something. You neva eva want to go above 70C for the Q6600.

I do suspect something funny with you bios... why didnt you PC shut down sooner ? Check your alarms and temp ranges for shutdown. Use Real Temp while running to check temps, will report for each core. Maybe the 120C you saw in the bios is the TJtemp, not the core temp ? Follow thes guys suggestions for measuring temps for the Q6600 ... http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=2229382

Ive run my Q6600 OC'd at 3.4ghz to a max of about 76C, thats why I settled for the 3.0ghz OC (idles at 35C peaks at 55C - using after market cooler) The stock intel CPU cooler just plain SUX! It would constantly run over 65C at stock settings for CPU.

Let us know how you go ....

Ive got a R220 aftermarket cooler on my Q6600 and I run it constant at 3.0Ghz never goes over 60C... Hopefully yours isnt buggered... Good luck with that ;)

Would take that advice with a pinch of salt - I've often seen damaged CPU's behave strangely depending on what was broken....

I had the same problem on my celaron D LG775 socket, eventually I found out that the stock heat paste had become brittle and was flaking away, try replacing the heat paste.

Thanks guys. Might just order myself one of those.

Just remember SlyFly is running it .. he might have an excetionally good CPU. Not all CPU's are made equal :( ! You get good ones and bad ones. Mine is Ok'ish. But I made for damn sure it would stay cool with the CM V8!

I think my Q6600 is one of the better ones. I briefly played around with OCing it with auto settings in the BIOS and got close to 3GHz with the stock cooler. This was on a Gigabyte G31 motherboard.

Hey guys. there is no pins on the q6600 to be bent or broken. and i've already replaced the thermal patse and that brought my temp down. but it read my cpu as 1.59ghz and now it wont even boot. so it must be fried. doesnt show post screen and doesnt even light my keyboard's numlock light.
