Hi there

I can't really say. I think MTN will also lock their data cards. The thing is like vodacom3g stated in one of the vodacom threads that the ISP subsidise the phone/datacard because they know they will make the money back through usage. I'm sure you know that if you add the 24months subscription costs for a contract it's not enough to even pay for the handset/datacard. So they will have to prevent loosing any money. The best way of preventing that is to lock the devices.

So maybe MTN will do that as well. But I can't really say. If you want you could ask MTN Data Dude on the MTN forum.

I thought locking was illegal

The cost of the contract is more than enough to cover the cost of the phones they include.

Locking phones is just a scam to make some money off you for unlocking the phone. Although this practice continues overseas as far as I know it isn't allowed here.

Any way to block these annoying signatures people put at the end of their posts? Or at least stop them from putting it in huge letters?

Piesang have you received your new sim yet? I havent received any response from them yet, after giving my number to you and calling them, emailing them and promised to be called back. Does this mean each one of us will have to complain on hellopeter.com before receiving a response?

Please have a look at post no 38 in this thread.

Hi there guys.

I received my SIM today. It works like a charm in the Huawei E620 Data Card.

The steps to take when you receive your card:

1. Remember to go to "Control Panel", "Phone & Modem Settings", "Choose your modem" and insert the following string: at+cgdcont=1,"ip","vdata","",0,0

2. Activate your SIM. *124*1*yournumber#

3. Dial 123 and ask them to activate DATA on your sim

4. If they ask your details tell them that you have a Virgin Mobile number and that they can link the two then you don't have to give all your details again.

5. Make a billable call from your Virgin Mobile sim. (10-15sec) You can do from your MTN Fasklink Software.

6. Connect to the net and enjoy the Cheapest Prepaid Mobile Internet in South Africa.

Any further questions please ask. I will answer them if I can.

Cheers guys

Ahaa! The hidden costs come crawling out of the woodwork :D
I've been told now by 4 Virgin salespeople that this 'billable call' is not required:--
--- Virgin will activate your card for you in the shop.
--- The call just needs to connect and NOT 10 - 15 seconds.
--- (Some have said it also works even if you do not connect!)

The next cheapest Internet is FREE!

We appreciate your activation handbook Piesang :p PS. How much do you want for your VM customer database of numbers :D :D

Has anybody else received their new sim's except Piesang, I haven’t heard anything from VM yet. Piesang would it be too much if I asked you to make a follow-up. I think I was the first to forward my no. to you.

I just received a call from Carmen at Virgin Mobile. She told me that they will receive 100 new sim cards tomorrow and then they will be contacting all you guys to confirm your addresses and then they will be sending it out to you all.

My brother and I received our sim cards today (delivered to my door) and we both got it to work.

Skeptik, I don't know why you think the worst of me. I'm just trying to help.

What the billable call is concerned, when you receive yor card then you can try using the internet without making a call.

My card didn't want to work at first, made the call and it worked perfectly.
My brother put his sim in his datacard after following the steps without making a billable call and guess what? He could connect to the net but couldn't open any web pages. I told him to disconnect and make a billable call. Connect to the internet and thrn it worked perfectly. So that is two sim cards that needed a billable call before it worked.

But please Skeptik, as soon as you receive your sim card let me know what you did to get it to work.

And about the numbers, can't do anything with it. Why would I want t sell 15 cellphone numbers??

I got mine today too. I works great. See my post in the speed section. The billable call is not so bad guys and I am sure there is a good technical reason for it. Either way the savings after you have used a couple of Mb is well worth it

My advice-- rush out and get an MTN Huawei E620 @ 49 per months for 24 months. Cheapest on the market. Right now he stock that is out there is not network locked so if MTN decide to lock at a later stage(like Vodacom are now) you at least have choices.I like the fact that I can use Vodacom, MTN and Cell C and VM on my card. Of course with each Mb cosating only 50c and no monthly commitment on Vm it is the cost effective way to be mobile.

Piesang you're doing a great job, I'm sure there are many in this forum who feels da same as for Skeptik "please get of his back", he is only trying to help us untill VM appoints a rep. for this forum.

No AT String needed

In my setup with the E620 I have not used the AT string. I am using the generic software from Huawei(not MTN branded thats the only difference) and have simply used a new profile with APN set to vdata. You can do the same in the MTN software.

At least I dont then need to fiddle in the control panel each time I am on a different network. Just create a profile for each.

@Piesang -I'm pulling your leg - the smilies at the end of the sentence is usually a clue. Gotta be careful on an anonymous forum. With my number you might want to send me some dodgy pix? ;)
Seriously, why give Virgin any of your money when you can avoid it. After all you donated alll of R89 for the starter pack!

Are these new sims available at the VM outlets yet? What do I ask for to make sure I get a card that works in my Huawei datacard? Which outlet works best?

Hi Trafeye. I'm still waiting on that answer. I don't think it's available in outlets as yet. Virgin Mobile will only be getting about a 100 sims tomorrow (Saturday). They first going to send out the sims to the users who's numbers I have forwarded to them. I assume they will be sending out the new sims to the stores as soon as the new stock arrives.

They are just waiting for the sim supplier to provide them with stocks. So at the moment it's out of their hands.

Will let you guys know as soon as I know.

oh nice to be part of the forum.........u guys here are great! ;-)

Got your vm number. Will forward it tomorrow morning (Monday)

Just some feedback for you guys about the new sim.

I'm been using mine this weekend without any major problems.

I did get a few disconnects on Friday evening but I'm not saying its the sim, it could be the reception as well. My reception is not very good where I live.

I'll keep you guys posted. I'll post a list here on this thread tomorrow morning with the names of everyone who's number I forwarded to Virgin Mobile. If your name doesn't appear on that list please let me know asap.

Regards
Piesang
