So for those of you that have 8 to 12mbit already, what are you experiences so far with it?
Is it stable? What is latency like? What are int HTTP downloads like? Youtube? Usenet? etc etc

thanks

I am on the Clareinch exchange - went to 8meg last week, and now synching at 10meg. Has been mostly stable - however, it was hard to test with the break on the Sat-3 cable the last few days, since it meant international connectivity was patchy. All things appear stable again, and Youtube streams are at a blistering 3-4mbps, speedtest reports download speeds of 8.5mbps - http://www.speedtest.net/result/704606905.png. Happy camper so far, but it's a bit too soon to tell. True test will be when there's a critical mass on the higher speeds. Not sure that I'll be able to synch at 12mbps, since I'm 1.7km from the exchange. Will settle for 10mbps though. Heck, was happy to settle for 8.

Nice to know :)
Well when i phones the telkom support line to see if i was on the bryanston exchange since i live 1km out they said No etc etc but when i asked about the trial the lady said if you find your router start to synch using ADSL2+ then that means your exchange is ready for the new speeds. She said she wasnt 100% sure on when all profiles would be changed but she said they are aiming for march. Best other people phone and lets try see what other info we can get.
I say end of March as its generally end of the financial year

doubt by end of march my exchange in pmb which is main one is still on g.dmt and 4 mbit hasnt upgraded to higher speeds

heh... 1.7km, especially on ADSL2+, should pretty easily be be close enough for 12Mbps if I'm not mistaken... I'm 2.2km and still I should be able to according to some estimates

Dude...
I would give my left youknowwhat for a 8ms web-computed latency!!! True latency is probably 2-5ms !!!!!

sigh...I think I hate you too ;)

If the trial continues to go well it's only good news for the SA internet community. 12MB/s might be slower and a lot more expensive then most of the world but at least things are slowly improving.

yea we're going somewhere slowly

But you must remember that 12mbit on GMT is the max a DSL1 line can do. 12mbit is more or less entry level for DSL2+ leaving some headroom for up to 24mbit i believe.
Well everyone was surprised but how quickly the 12mbit trial started, it began like a day or two after it was announced. I rate people start phoning 0800 DSL DSL and just query
about 12mbit upgrades and plans etc, like i said you never know what you might get out.

Yep phone telkom and they will tell you what exchange your on.
I called today as my DSL kept on dropping and i needed my port reset and struck up a small convo and he said alot of the DSLAM are being upgraded to support ADSL2+ and that a few of the Randburg exchanges would be switched over soon

I hope Bromhof is one of them.
