It looks like telkom are changing the way it works, instead of syncing one step up, they sync at the speed of the account. So they don't actually cap you at the exchange but by some other way with their software.

The reason I believe so is that they sync you at the 384/128 to see if it works properly. During this tesing period, you still have normal 192k speeds. Then finally after they figured out that it works, you get the full speed, but still sync at 384/128. Not sure why they are changing it now though, but I think the same will apply for all the speeds later too. So 512k should become 512/256 if this is what's happening.

192k to 384k?

Hi,
I'm Roger W. and I live and work in the USA. I have worked as a supplier to Telkom in the past and I understand the frustration you folks have with the ADSL bandwidth you are being supplied. Unfortunately, the physical network (copper pairs, street cabinets, cables, etc., etc.) are not in very good condition in most areas of the country. With simple ADSL, the bandwidth is very small in comparison to what is available in many countries. Telkom should switch to ADSL2 (not ADSL2+) because ADSL2 will carry the signal farther than simple ADSL and provide more bandwidth which is what I believe you are looking for. ADSL2+ is great for IPTV and other high bandwidth applications but it will not carry the signal as far as ADSL2 (you loose about 200m with ADSL2+).

Regardless, you should be talking with Telkom's management about fixing and maintaining the physical access network first. After they do that, then you need to campaign for ADSL2 and in urban areas ADSL2+.

Good luck. I hope you are all successful.

Roger W. Things are easier said than done. Telkom struggle providing normal bandwidth to us. Last I heard, they struggle with their current networks and at one stage it was close to collapsing because of demand. Asking them to supply ADSL2 will practically be impossible. I really wish they could but since they refuse to upgrade their infrastructure cos they want to squeeze every cent out of the current one the taxpayers have helped built.

Still waiting for my upgrade!

Ok still no faster speeds. I think maybe they are testing syncs for all areas and only after all has been tested will they start to "upgrade" the lines to 384 via software?

Well who knows, they may even have run into some problems along the way this is, by the looks of things, a very big project maybe even bigger than Telkom had thought at the start.

So I will wait to see when people start posting things like “YEAH I HAVE 384 NOW!!”, before I restart my modem again!

Same here... My poor router, over the past three days it's been switched on and
off quite a number of times! :)

The synch is there, so the speed can't be that far off.... J/J Who knows!!

Dam there are alot of 192 users, Telkom ADSL must be really expensive that every one has to get the bottom of the line, o wait, it is. on the sync at 384/128 story, mine has changed to that aswell with no speed change to the download, HOWEVER, i used to sync at 320/192, i used to upload at 18k then and since this change in sync (to 128 upload) i can only top 12k. so they have changed my upload speed but not enabled my dowload speed yet. But if you didn't get that, my upload looks like it is going to be downgraded if these sync speeds stick, that sucks

I speak to telkom almost everyday to get my line..still waiting...; I was forced to order 192K, so was curious to find out if I would be getting the 384K (when I get a date for installtion). Telkom guy said that the advert was to attract customers, but the actual upgrade will take place but we should not be hopeful that will happen immediately. We should wait for a couple more weeks (he said by end of August) when they will be reaching full capacity to roll-out the upgrades.

Actually, I have given up....week 6 now since I ordered a ADSL service. I am planning to go submit a formal complaint...wishe me luck!

OH NOES!!!

My synch speed is 384/128 & Speed test

* Download time: 23.273 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 175.3 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 21.5 (kiloBytes/second)

But here's the funny thing. Last night there was a power outage here so i pulled the plug on my pc equipment to prevent it frying when the power surge comes/i mean power comes back. So can't be that my router was not synching cause everyones one was dead. :confused::confused: Speed is 1kB/s better :/
