Well I can give you some insight having gone from a Xiaomi 1C without self cleaning and without Lidar to a Xiaomi X20+ that has both.

Lidar : This changes the entire game and the first mapping took all of twenty minutes and did an incredible job of it where the one without this took multiple cleanings and then it’s still all based on bump dynamics.

It also had no intelligence for detecting things it’s shouldn’t clean and so would get stuck on anything and everything all the time.

Granted you weren’t going to go that cheap just putting it out there.

Self-cleaning : This is a huge matter of convenience and changed the entire game for me.

Mine now runs twice a week on a Monday and Friday and I would guess I only need to change the water every other week maybe even every third if I didn’t do some manual runs in between.

It claims to be doing around a 100sqm with every clean but this seems very inaccurate in a 250sqm house but I guess one has to account for the garage and braai room it’s not doing and furniture it also can’t clean under.

One “con” compared to the normal onboard system with a water tank is that it goes back to base every 10sqm cleaned to refill, but the bonus is it also cleans the mops when it does this so it’s not a bad thing.

I’m yet to need to replace the bag after a total of 419sqm cleaned according to the logs, but like someone mentioned here they just vacuum theirs out and I’m betting you could just shake it out over your big bin as well.

One thing I didn’t expect was the slight hum from the unit while it dries the mops as it sits in my lounge where we watch TV at night. The default is set to 4 hours and I turned it down to 2 which doesn’t seem enough so upped it to 3 now and will check next time how dry they are.

In fairness on my old one I just left the mop on there and never had any mould issues so this is probably a non-event.

You have the option to first vacuum and then mop instead of both at once but I feel this just means you’d have more dust in the air and I prefer it to be all done at once.

Carpets after you mapped them works well and it just lifts the mops and vacuums those areas harder presumably for having more power available while the mops are off. Not a feature worth paying for on the X10 which detects carpets for much more money.

Considering I paid R11k I got it for a very good price but I’ve seen Takealot dip down to that plenty of times so it may happen again often.

Overall knowing what I know now I wouldn’t go without self-cleaning.

This is much appreciated, thanks

Been looking at the s10+ which doesn't have self cleaning vs the x20+ or x10+ and the theme has been that self cleaning is a big thing.

The x10+ is older but slightly more advanced, the naming convention is a bit odd

It is very strange yeah.

Go for the X20+ you won’t be disappointed.

Wait for a deal if it’s not urgent. Add it to Serval and other wish lists and wait it out.

Just checked I paid R9,999, not R10,999 like I thought.

Price is now R11,999 which is still not bad but also awaiting stock.

My current settings:

I have mine "vacuum then mop" the kitchen at 6:30 every day except Thursday (Maid comes every 2nd Thursday).
I like that floor to be clean.
Then at at 7:00 I have it just vacuum half the house and the next day the other half.

I'll have it "vacuum and mop" the whole house one a week when I go out. That takes more than an hour.

Actually not a terrible idea to have the kitchen done more often as I currently do it manually some nights when I’ve made a mess of it and it’s the most prone to getting dirty.

I have a parrot though which absolutely hates the thing which is why I’m getting not too keen on too many automatic runs.

We have a domestic come in once a week on Wednesdays which is why I’ve just set it up to run outside of that.

But I’ll try the vacuum then mop mode next week and see how it goes but for an allergy prone household it makes sense to me to have it all done at once.

Get your bird a cat suit.

We have four cats ,I have to empty the bin everyday and it's like a cat sized amount of hair that comes out.

Initially, I used to do a full run mop and vacuum at 4am . Everyday, with the clean up around the edges option selected.
10am mop the bathroom after everyone has finished using it

3pm run mon to Friday, kitchen and lounge gets vacuumed to clean up before I get home

There's an option also to do a double clean which I have never tried

Which robo are you using?
We have 3 dogs and the amount of hair is just getting crazy; my wife just asked me the other day if a robo vac wouldn't be a good thing.
Just not sure which one handles dog hair like a champ.
Any advise?
We don't have any carpets on the ground floor but only wooden floors; area is around 130 sqm on the ground floor.

Thanks!

I've got the X10+ and have loved every minute of it.

The mapping feature is incredible - able to tailor the cleaning of different rooms.

It's incredible how much dirt it picks up, and it will go anywhere it can get into it - every nook and corner, under counters that it can fit etc.

The fac that it cleans itself as well is a huge win and time saver - just be aware you do need to clean the robot every now and then and there are a lot of parts that come out - worthwhile to do, but it takes me about 30min to give it a proper clean.

Just be aware of carpets that are slightly thicker - we have an area carpet in the one room that is pretty thick pile and the self raising mopping pads can't get high enough - so I keep the "avoid carpets" option on when mopping.

Another thing to consider when looking at these robots is your pet situation - I read a few reviews of other robots that they couldn't detect your pets "presents" and people came home to a bit of a horror scene, with their robot kindly spreading it over the entire house.

Have to say that overall I am very very impressed with this little robot - has saved me hours and hours of vacuuming, sweeping and mopping - well worth the investment!

This would be the one to get but the $$$$$$ is mad

I have an s20+.

A frustrating quirk I have with the thing is it randomly loses maps.

I have 4 maps. Two for upstairs, two for downstairs. Because of how odd the house is, I have to have separate ones.

I usually take it to a different section, go in the app, change the map, tell it to go.

Most of the time, that works fine.

Other times, it will merge what yes now seeing over an existing map. Then when it's done, it'll decide it's created a new map. Or it'll just start out making a new map. The old one disappears or needs deleting.

Anyone else have this?

It'll be fine for a month after I've saved the maps and named them nicely. Then it starts it's troubles.

Yeah, it really is not cheap - I waited a long time and eventually it came up on ODO with an incredible deal.

The other one I was looking at was the Ecovax, but that was even more expensive!

I'm curious as to what everyone's use cases are for integrating vacuums into HA other than " integrate all things ".

My first thought ( as mentioned in a previous post ) was to clean when we leave the house between say 09h00 and 17h00. If we come home, it can scuttle back to the dock.

I personally haven't integrated yet as I'm prone to trigger manually when the place needs a clean. I prefer to lift up dining room chairs etc. for a proper clean.

Any other cool automation ideas ?

So I am still working mine all out, but here is what I have for now.

  • The notifications on what is going on with the robot, is MUCH better in home assistant than getting spammed by the xiaomi app. I only use them now They only let you know, if there is something you SHOULD know. It is great.
  • There is a zigbee button in the kitchen, which initially was only used as an additional switch for the kitchen lights. 1 tap toggles the light on/off. double tap sets it to almost fully bright for when you want to work in the kitchen (its faster than holding in the normal light switch). When you hold it, it now starts a mop in the kitchen. Much easier than getting a phone out. Planning to do similar in other rooms in the house where we have zigbee buttons
  • For the morning clean, just before everyone wakes up, this is the kitchen and lounge, I now let it turn on the lights, since it is dark, to help the vacuum camera better detect pet presents on the floor.
So not a whole lot right now, but it is a work in progress. For me, automations, unfortunately, is a process to work through. Start with an idea, evaluate if it works or not, or just needs improvement. Essentially, if my wife complains, that is feedback that it either interferes or needs fixing/improvement. These automations should really be there to help us and not get in our way.

The morning clean works well, its the ideal time to clean before the house gets going. Then when everyone has left the house, is when it will go clean other rooms, with the exception of the kid's rooms. They are never robot ready unless we manually check them.

Something else I have been testing, and I am very happy with is adding floor cleaner.

The X20+ as I understand, is essentially the Dreame L10, which you can use this cleaner: https://www.takealot.com/dreame-multi-surface-floor-cleaner-solution-1l/PLID95150160

That said, that price is over the top so after talking with some people, I found out about this, which so far have excellent results:

Love the extra shine and clean it gives as well as it smells nice at a great price point. This is mean for the Karcher robot vacuum, which IMHO is an overpriced bot. This cleaner however is priced right.

We were gifted a Taroma Robi 1 by my wife's uncle so getting it up and running in our house. Any tips or suggestions from the experienced?
