2011 predictions in a nutshell

Even if W8 were released, it is too soon on the back of W7 and unlikely to carry the same hype. This is especially true considering the poor perception of it's predecessor, Vista. I have just bought W7 and I am happy to use it for some time to come.

On a more local front; the Boks will retain the RWC, the Proteas will win the CWC and LLU will be implemented by December 2011.

Vodacom and MTN will lose market share to Cell C and 8ta.

Telkom will ............. well Telkom will be Telkom.

Be positive and make a difference.

Yes LLU this year, what, don't you trust the honorable minister? He wouldn't lie to the public would he? :D

Cheaper bandwidth prices hopefully by FTTH ;-) , drive to connect up more remote rural communities

Oh come on...those are current trends & release schedules not predictions.

Min ADSL sync bumped to 1mbps. ADSL copper infrastructure deteriorates in non-metro areas as Telkom stops investment there.

ADSL capped prices stablize at R5 per gig. Local cap fades into oblivion & only offered as a specialist niche product.

Telkom launches consumer uncapped in March. Cross subsidizes to (unfairly) pwned Mweb/IS uncapped.

Blackberry lose most of their non-business market share. Android grabs the turf surrendered. Microsoft successfully pushes W7 mobile, but fails to match apple/android marketshare.

Yahoo announces major reshuffle of their operations, attempts to maintain relevance but fails.

IPv6 implementation is total chaos. We run out of ipv4 space too soon (October). Consequences are less severe than expected: Existing ip space is used more efficiently to compensate.

Amazon cloud (continues to) dominate all.

Wikileaks drops major leak on US financial stability/banking sector...this destabilizes US politics. Independents gain ground on Rep/Dem. Major reforms prevent world-wide melt-down in the long-term. HFT is severely restricted after some close calls.

EU zone reshuffles & creates two tiered system (financial side).

Minor localized SA blackouts in June/July. Quickly fixed when it hits the media.

Zim situation flares up, but then stabilizes. Same for the Koreas.

SANRAL backs off on 70c/km plan & announces heavily discounted year subscriptions.

Particle physics breakthrough announced: Higgs Boson found.

3D display tech creeps into the market at a glacial pace.

IE 9 complies w/ HTML 5 full spec by year-end.

Major health scare in Gauteng. Food/Water related.

Theora/WebM makes little progress.

Google Go challenges Python & matches mind share.

Most of the above is negative...for the simple reason that negative events are easier to predict. On the whole 2011 is going to be an epic year, especially for SA. Also, if you're wondering why I'm writing predictions at 3:30AM...large quantities of Cola & coffee on new years is a bad idea.

Unemployment dramatically reduced.

Cope resolves its differences and becomes a force in politics.

ANC lose local elections.

Corruption in politics is eradicated.

Traffic police enforce law; bribes shunned.

pigs will turn fluorescent and start giving out free flying lessons :p

:D

The hazard with predicting IT-related stuff is well-known, I won't comment or predict anything yet.

Hybrid lithium-graphine batteries reach commercialisation: http://www.pnl.gov/news/release.aspx?id=807
Now all we've got to do is get the telsa-list(runs on laptop batteries) implementation, an I can get 200 miles on every 2 min electric charge. This will lead to a total revolution of cars, in fact it will spark a total revolution transport in general. It costs less than a tenth to plug-in than to fillup.

& Vodacom/MTN reduces Broadband prices, & launch LTE.

That would be awesome!

Would like it to be :)

Lithium batteries may also well get a good boost in capacity. All we need from this is a single double up and we have effectively equaled petrol-vehicles in range and fill-up time + electric moters are more powerful and will redefine new concepts of new vechiles (ie. Nissan iV).

We have also got the tech to make these batteries last up to 20 years, and at no additional cost.
