2011 Super Rugby (Super 15) thread

I updated the player movements post with new names and updates(red)

Beast will stay at the Sharks.
Tian Meyer moves to the Sharks from Pumas but just for Super Rugby. He will return to Witbank for the Currie Cup.
Andre Pretorius back at the Lions after playing for Sharks in Currie Cup.

Because of his "talent" of getting injured so easily, Pretorius will most likely get paid for each game that he plays and will not score a contract.

*whew* pleased to great that Beast will continue with The Sharks :D

Feel sorry fit Pretorius... when in one piece he's a quality player and confidence to the back line.

Terrible format. The games I most enjoyed in the SuperX were our teams playing against the Aussies/Kiwis. Now we have a faux Currie Cup, and then some sort of mangled Super15. And then the Currie Cup. **** sake.

I hope that the thread doesn't get derailed, but the other big factor is that Aus 'needed' a domestic competition. They don't have a national comp, and rugby union is not doing too well compared to rughy leage, Aussie rules and soccer over there. This new format gives them a domestic tournement.

That I never knew - soccer! But crazydude you indeed have hit one of the nails. The other is money. This format is, for me, so messed up that choosing a favourite from a punting point of view is near impossible. While one of the strong teams may stand out as an easy favourite, another team that has an easier route to a semi and thus more points could get an unfair home advantage. Let me not say unfair - let me say undeserved.

This makes for intriguing rugby which only time can show to be exciting or a killer to the game. I am cautiously optimistic, to borrow a phrase.

I'm not a fan either, but the money could help SA rugby too. Some reports are saying that the lure of the Euro may see many more SA players move to France. If this new system keeps more SA players here, I guess that is one positive point.

My main worry is that this move will make Super Rugby the only rugby which is watched in SA. While some may not like the Currie Cup, it at least guves the 'smaller' unions a chance to make some money.

Supersport just confirmed to Rugby15 that they will only televise one of the Super Rugby warm up matches. They are only doing one "trial run" before the tournament starts.

They will cover the Stormers vs Sharks game on 5 February @17h00

If you are going to play Superbru this season:

Please remember to also join the SuperPool started by Rugby15.
The Pool Name is Rugby15 and the Pool Code to join is daistees

I'm Captain of the pool and will approve applications as fast as I can.

There will also be sponsored prizes and gear throughout the competition, so bring your A-Game.

The rugby better start now. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms.

Stormers win 15-0 after leading 5-0 at halftime.

Tries by Juan de Jongh, Schalk Burger and Danie Poolman. All conversions missed

Other warm up results:

REDS 42 - 15 CRUSADERS
MELBOURNE REBELS 42 - 27 FIJI
HURRICANES 35 - 31 CHIEFS
SOUTHERN KINGS 23 - 7 BULLS

Hats of to the Kings, they outplayed the Bulls last night convincingly.
I know that was the Bulls "B" Team, but if that is your guys excuse then why didn't you play with your strongest team?
Besides, anyone takes 2 - 4 matches to be at their prime..

Reds and Melbourne Rebels of to a good start. The unknown team might prove to be the downfall of a few bigger sides.

Congrats to the Kings but I won't read anything into this result except that the Bulls might be lacking a little bit of depth this year, especially in experience and leadership.

I only watched the match this afternoon and the Bulls had more than enough opportunities to score tries and claim victory but the experience and composure to finish was not there. The young players were trying to rush things and lost possession in critical try-scoring positions. With players like Spies, Matfield, Botha, Steenkamp, Stegmann, Potgieter, Du Preez, Steyn, Olivier, Hougaard, Van den Heever, Bjorn Basson and Kirchner I'm sure they will be one of the major forces this season.

I'm not taking anything away from the Kings. They played great rugby with good defense and the two tries they scored were pure bliss and textbook stuff.

Early days for the Bulls. Most of the sides are still shrugging off their short break. They'll hit their straps soon enough.
