2011 Super Rugby (Super 15) thread

The Lions lost Andre Pretorius to a grade one hamstring injury shortly before halftime, with Burton Francis making a good impression when he came on as a replacement.

Andre unlikely to last the season. He hasn't the hamstrings for rugby, poor bugger...

Worst news ever! The poor guy has the worst luck. Maybe he should hang up his boots and become a kicking coach?

The Cheetahs unveild their new jersey: News24

There's no main sponsor's logo on it, so it looks like the supposed deal with Toyota fell through.

It didn't fall through. This jersey/apparel launch was only for the PUMA brand. I was lucky enough to be invited and to attend the launch on Saturday in Bloem.

Was a great evening and the party was great. Puma really went through a lot of trouble to make it an enjoyable event.

The main Sponsor will only be officially unveiled tomorrow evening but 99.9% sure it is Toyota. Rugby15 will be there again(not me this time).

Some player news.
Brussow should be ready in the 4th week of the tournament. He looks in awesome shape and says he is very excited to finally make a return after almost a year on the sideline.
Ashley Johnson shed a few pounds and looks in the best shape I've ever seen him. One of the nicest guys I had a chat to at the party.
Juan Smith, yeah well, it's captain courageous!
Philip Burger the speedster back in orange. Should piss a few people off but great asset for the Bloem team.
Andries Strauss very happy to be back in Bloem. Him, Frans Viljoen and Coenie Oosthuizen had a blast at the party.

Just to add. Jack Parow made an appearance at the party just before 23h00. Whether it was a good idea, I'm not so sure. Some mixed feelings and reactions when he performed. Not my cup of tea but some fans and players seemed to enjoy his "zef" show.

I like what I am reading... A fit and firing Brussow is just what Cheetah and SA rugby requires. As for Philip Burger, always found him massively entertaining to watch!! A man who enjoys his rugby and on his day has the pace to run rings around the best... Really looking forward to seeing him play this season..

Wow, what would the Cheetahs back 3 be? Nokwe at 11, Henni at 15 and Burger at 14?? Just looking at the Cheetahs squad and I tell you what they look a very competent unit... More depth this year than in many seasons gone by... Lets hope they fire..

I'll be completely honest. I am a bit biased when it comes to Burger but I try and be as objective as possible where necessary. He is a good friend of mine and I also love watching him play.

He is probably one of the fastest wings in SA Rugby at the moment certainly one of the most entertaining in world rugby.

If you know him, you will understand and know why he does what what he does on the field(eg. Big dives when scoring, taunting of crowd, etc...) and you will nod in agreement. He is NOT like that in real life. Big family man and down to earth guy.

Anyway, moving along swiftly.

Forgot to mention Sarel Pretorius. He is so ready and excited for the season ahead. He lost some form towards the end of the 2010 season but he is determined to play his best rugby this year.

Unfortunately Nokwe is injured and his chances to play this year are very very slim.
The back three should be Daniller, Burger and Rayno Benjamin.

I can tell you with all honesty that the Cheetahs are aiming and confident for their best season ever. Naka Drotske and Harold Verster said this is the first season ever that the Cheetahs have retained each and every player that they wanted. Along with the new signings and old players returning they have the best squad in years.

And the new format fits the Cheetahs like a glove. More local derbies(where they always perform) and less traveling.

The more I look at the Cheetah squad the more confident I am that they will be competitive this year! I don't see the big teams making an impression. Inevitably the big name Boks will have 1 eye on the big prize, the World cup. How will that effect their commitment to Super 15 and then Tri-nations. Personally I don't think there should be Tri-nations in World cup year. It's ridiculous the expectations on the top players...

Unfortunately Nokwe is injured
Very disappointing.

Very good points.

I don't think the Cheetahs have played any warm up matches as yet..? Or have they?

They played the Griffons with their second stringers and won. Also played Shimlas(UFS) with their second stringers and won. Not by big margins IIRC.

Then played the Southern Kings in PE with a near full strength squad and smashed them to pieces in first half. Made lots of changes in 2nd half and scored only a few more tries.

All their other games for preparation were against their Vodacom Cup squad in practice.

First results are in:

Hurricanes 9 - 14 Hurricanes
Rebels 0 - 43 Waratahs

Hurricanes enjoy a SHARK START* to their season

(* Good team falls to mediocre local bogey side; sometimes signals SHARK SEASON).

EDIT: I miss lance - he woulda appreciated this comment so much less than any else.

Great ad for Super Rugby 2011. Except for the horrible kicking from both sides.
