2017 Hyundai i30 (3rd Generation)

Hyundai adds sleek i30 Fastback variant to its range

Before today, the current Hyundai i30 (which has yet to appear in South Africa) came in two shapes: hatchback and stationwagon. But this new model, dubbed the i30 Fastback, fills a gap for those who prefer something closer to compact sedan over a conventional hatchback.

Key elements of the new design are the signature cascading front grille and the dramatically sloping roofline, which is 25 mm lower than that of the hatchback. The boot lid also benefits from an integrated rear spoiler. Completing the design are new 17-inch alloy wheels (18-inch wheels are optional).

The ride height of the i30 Fastback (which the Korean automaker bills as a “five-door coupé”) has also been lowered by 5 mm while the suspension has been stiffened by 15%. As far as dimensions are concerned, the i30 Fastback is 115 mm longer than the hatch, while its height is some 30 mm down.

Engine options for the new model include the 1,0-litre three-cylinder and 1,4-litre four-cylinder T-GDI petrol units as well as a newly developed 1,6-litre turbodiesel, with the latter delivering 81 kW as standard (although a “high power” 100 kW variant will also be available). The two larger engines can be mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the three-pot comes linked to a manual only.

The i30 Fastback is expected to be launched at the beginning of 2018. Local availability has yet to be announced.

Hyundai's new i30 morphs into a sexy Fastback

This is not a rendering; these are actual photographs of the new Hyundai i30 Fastback, due in showrooms in Europe in the first quarter of 2018.

It’s based on the new i30, hatch, but with its chassis lowered 5mm and suspension stiffened by 15 percent. The roof and grille have been lowered 25mm, and there’s a new lower air intake to give the Fastback a lower, sportier stance.

That makes it 30mm lower overall than the hatch, standing just 1425mm tall; at 4455mm it’s 115mm longer than the five-door, nearly all of it at the rear, where the roof sweeps down to a dramatically arched rear spoiler.

The Fastback has all the standard safety kit of its hatch sibling, including autonomous emergency braking, driver attention alert, smart cruise control, blind-spot detector, rear cross-traffic alert, high-beam assist and lane-keeping assist.

It’ll be available at launch in Europe with a choice of two new turbopetrol engines - a 103kW 1.4-litre four, mated to either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, or an 88kW one-litre three, driving via a six-speed manual ‘box.

Still to come is a 1.6-litre turbodiesel in two states of tune - 80kW or 100kW - each mated to your choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch cogsets.

While it’s been confirmed that the new i30 hatch will be with us in South Africa in the last quarter of 2017, there’s no clarity yet on whether we will be getting the Fastback as well. As soon as we know, so will you.

HYUNDAI HOPES I30 FASTBACK WILL LURE BACK SUV BUYERS

A Hyundai executive believes that many buyers have moved from hatchbacks and sedans to SUVs since the current offerings in the C-segment are “a bit boring”. However, he hopes that the new i30 Fastback will change that.

The i30 Fastback features a dramatically sloped roofline, which is some 25 mm lower than that of the i30 hatchback, culminating in a sleek integrated rear spoiler.

Thomas Schmid, chief operating officer of Hyundai Europe, told Automotive News that the market’s move towards SUVs “might be because the C-segment is a bit boring”.

He told the publication that he believed the new, five-door i30 Fastback could lure buyers back into this shrinking segment.

“We are the first in this segment with this type of car, and now we have the biggest line-up in the C-segment,” Schmid added.

The Hyundai executive said he wanted to “see how the market reacts” to the sleekly styled newcomer, adding that “in some markets, such as the UK, this kind of GT-looking sedan is very popular”.

Still, Schmid was guarded when it came to sales projections.

“We have a target of selling the i30 Fastback in a very small double-digit thousand number. But I feel it will be much higher, although it will take away some customers from the hatchback version,” he admitted, adding that the fastback’s price would be “as close as possible” to that of i30 variants.

The 2018 Hyundai Elantra (i30) GT Sport Is A Value-Packed Turbo Hatchback That You Shouldn’t Ignore

Our excellent Canadian test pilot said the all new Elantra Sport sedan is a pretty damn good car with a helping of fun, especially for its price point. Well, if you wanted the same goodness but with a more practical body, Hyundai will now offer the Elantra GT hatchback.

Due to arrive in showrooms soon, the Elantra GT will do battle with the Mazda3, VW Golf, Honda Civic, and similar small hatches. What it is not, is a bargain GTI or Focus ST fighter. This is a commuter car with an injection of sportiness, packed full of features, for an incredibly reasonable price.

Hyundai says the Elantra GT has more cargo room that all of its five-door competitors, which doesn’t sound all that exciting, but those extra cubic feet matter especially if you need to toss a stroller or some gear in the back.

The Elantra GT will start $20,235 (including destination) for a base car with a 160 horsepower 2.0 liter and a six-speed manual transmission, add an extra grand if you wanted a six-speed auto. Standard features will include 17 inch wheels, an 8-inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a cool remote start feature via Amazon Alexa/Hyundai BlueLink will be available.

The car you want is the Elantra GT Sport that comes with the same 201 HP, 1.6-liter turbocharged motor and six-speed manual from the Elantra Sport sedan. The GT Sport will start at $24,125 (including destination), a dual-clutch automatic will cost another $1000.

The Sport gets the requisite 18-inch alloys wrapped in high-performance all-season tires, in addition to larger brakes, and swaps out the regular GT’s suspension for a rear multilink setup that Hyundai says gives the GT Sport more dynamic handling.

The GT Sport will also be available with the usual array of advanced safety features such as automatic braking, blind spot warning, and collision mitigation.

Hyundai has come along way from being just a “value brand” but the Elantra GT still packs a ton of features and fun, in addition to a long warranty in a compelling package.

Hyundai i30 Fastback 2018 review

Should I buy one?

You might well consider it a tempting buy. After all, the Fastback represents a dynamic improvement over the i30 hatchback and, objectively speaking, that car gives very little cause for complaint, neither in terms of practicality nor driveability nor build quality, but especially not in terms of cost. Hyundai has been canny in levying only a £500 premium on the new car, which seems good value.

This makes the i30 Fastback an intriguing proposition. Its niche is undeniably narrow and pinning down its reason for being is, well, difficult. We imagine the majority of drivers in the market for something a little exotic won’t be queuing around the block for a Hyundai, and yet many a hatchback buyer may crave something a little different. The i30 Fastback is just that, and no worse for it.

Hyundai i30 Fastback Premium 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

In a way, it’s a compliment to Hyundai’s developing boldness that identifying likely buyers for the i30 Fastback is a little difficult. It’s more dynamic than the hatchback sibling, but unlikely to appeal to those seeking a really sporty coupé.

Yet, there is a decent amount of appeal here: it’s practical, decent to drive, well built and well priced compared with the hatch version. In the same way the Audi A3 Sportback has found itself an audience, those seeking a slightly alternate family car would find plenty of positives here.
