HYUNDAI SAYS I30 N IS ‘MORE PRECISE’ THAN A GOLF GTI

The man in charge of the Hyundai group’s high-performance division claims that the upcoming Hyundai i30 N hot hatch is “more precise” than the Volkswagen Golf GTI against which it was benchmarked.

Albert Biermann, who in April 2015 moved to the Korean automaker from his previous position at the helm of the BMW M division, told CarAdvice that the i30 N was more focused than the venerable Golf GTI.

“What we have created with the i30 N is a lot different from a Golf GTI. Our car is more focused towards track driving than the GTI, though, the GTI is slightly better for day-to-day driving,” Biermann told the Australian publication.

“Our car is more precise, faster reacting, more communicative and with more feedback. You have to feel what’s going on wheel side, especially with a front-wheel drive car,” he added.

According to the CarAdvice report, the i30 N will likely be available in two outputs – one with about 184 kW and the other with around 205 kW – both boasting more power than the facelifted Golf GTI, which comes in at 169 kW. But Biermann stressed that it wasn’t all about the figures.

“It’s about having fun in the bends or on a nice twisty road. What we have created with the i30 N is a car that’s approachable, forgiving and one which allows the driver to explore the limits of the car without any scary moments,” he said.

Hyundai reveals 'near-production' i30 N hot hatch

Hyundai has high hopes for its upcoming i30 N, the first model from its new high-performance sub-brand, apparently benchmarking the hot hatch against the venerable Volkswagen Golf GTI and claiming it to be “more precise”. But now the Korean automaker has revealed a “close-to-series-production” version, albeit in light race trim.

The manufacturer confirmed that it would enter two i30 N models into the ADAC Zurich 24-hour race at Nürburgring, saying that the event would represent “the final testing of the vehicle”.

“We will use the race as a final test for our Hyundai i30 N development to check how the vehicle is performing under these extreme conditions and where we can still fine-tune the car before its market launch,” said Albert Biermann, chief of vehicle testing and high performance at the Hyundai Group.

“With the Hyundai i30 N, we want to offer a car that feels direct, responsive and predictable and that performs well on the track without compromising every day driving capabilities. Most importantly the i30 N should be fun to drive for everyone,” the former BMW M boss added.

The two cars participating in the race will enter the SP3T class (1,6- to 2,0-litre turbocharged engines), and are each equipped with a 2,0-litre turbocharged petrol engine linked to a six-speed manual transmission, with Hyundai confirming that this same powertrain combination will be employed by the i30 N series model.

For participation in the endurance race, the two cars have been modified mainly in the area of driver safety, and now feature an FIA-homologated roll-cage, a fire extinguisher and a racing seat. The two vehicles have furthermore been fitted with racing tyres and brakes. Additionally, they each gain a front splitter and rear spoiler for the race.

The team of drivers includes engineers from Hyundai’s Global R&D Centre in Namyang, professional drivers and journalists.

Hyundai i30 N hot hatch to race in Nurburgring 24 Hours

First N-badged Hyundai performance model is competing at the 'Ring before it goes on sale this autumn for less than £30,000

Hyundai will race a competition version of its i30N hot hatch at this weekend's Nürburgring 24 Hour race, and it's released a preview video ahead of the event.

Two stripped-out, near production specification models will take part in the daylong event, which sees everything from GT3-spec cars to modified road models share the asphalt.

Engineers will use the running to hone the setup of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST rival before the road version's anticipated launch at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Alongside its race programme, the firm has been readying its production model for launch, most recently testing with a development car in Britain.

Hyundai's head of vehicle testing and high performance development, Albert Biermann, said "we have to make sure that on these challenging UK roads, the driving performance is also comfortable enough for everyday driving."

It was expected that the i30 would join the local line-up later this year but the latest news suggests that the launch has been pushed out, perhaps even to 2018. With chiselled new looks, a near-premium cabin with the latest technologies and some turbocharged power under the bonnet, the i30 looks set to further advance Hyundai up the status ladder.

First N-badged Hyundai performance model has been testing at the 'Ring before it goes on sale this autumn for less than £30,000

Hyundai has previewed its upcoming i30N hot hatch in a new video of it at the Nürbugring - released before the car is revealed on the 13 July.

It shows the future Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST rival being driven at pace on the track where much of its testing and development has taken place.

In the footage, the brand's head of vehicle testing and high performance development, Albert Biermann, says the car has been developed to withstand long stints at track pace.

Along with its road car testing, the brand entered two racing i30Ns into this year's Nürburgring 24 Hour event - something it said has helped improve the road car.

After introducing the Hyundai i30 and the i30 Tourer, Hyundai Motor has unveiled the Hyundai i30 Fastback - the latest addition to the i30 range, available by the beginning of 2018. The new body type reflects Hyundai's design language while giving it a sophisticated twist with an elegant character.

"The i30 range represents the core of our Hyundai brand in Europe," says Thomas A. Schmid, Chief Operating Officer at Hyundai Motor Europe. "The i30 Fastback is the newest in our range, bringing a unique new approach to this popular segment. The sophisticated design of this model incorporates the essence of our philosophy, making premium design accessible for everyone. The i30 Fastback is the first elegant five-door coupe to enter the compact segment, underlining our commitment to innovation and customer choice."

Sophisticated silhouette and charismatic proportions

The Hyundai i30 Fastback is characterised by its strong stance and sporty, elongated lines. With the reduction of the Cascading Grille's height at the front, it appears wider and more clearly defined, emphasising the bonnet. A lower horizontal air intake below the grille gives the i30 Fastback a charismatic front. Strong corners and an angled lower front spoiler create a muscular, proud appearance. At the front, full LED Daytime Running Lights and headlamps with a premium dark bezel round off the i30 Fastback's visual impact.

"The i30 Fastback is a real game-changer. We are the first volume brand to enter the compact segment with a stylish and sophisticated 5-door coupé," explains Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Design Centre Europe. "When designing the i30 Fastback we played with the proportions of the i30 range by reducing the height of the Cascading Grille and lowering the roof line. The elegant silhouette is further emphasised by the generously arched rear spoiler shape. Our team was able to achieve a pure design, which combines the sports car spirit with the comfort of a luxurious sedan. With this innovative approach to compact cars, we enable our customers to make an expressive statement when driving the Fastback."

The i30 Fastback has a sophisticated silhouette featuring typical dynamic sports coupe proportions, thanks to the elegant sloping roofline, a long bonnet and a muscular body. Its slim cabin sits on a wide body, emphasised by wide wheel arches which gives the car a strong stance. Using classic automotive design codes, the roof has been lowered by 25 millimetres compared with the i30 five-door, enhancing the car's wide stance on the road, improving aerodynamics and creating a dramatic impression.

Tapering towards the rear, the cabin has a sleek shape, inspired by the shape of a teardrop. The rear of the cabin is additionally supported by strong shoulders. The emphasis on the rear makes the i30 Fastback look capable and assertive.

The Hyundai i30 Fastback's charismatic silhouette is completed by a generously arched rear spoiler that is integrated into the tailgate and continues to the rear lights. Dividing and sculpting the surfaces creates a vivid play of light and shadow, adding drama to the car. The C-pillar and the rear windscreen are inspired by the premium segment and designed with refined shapes, reinforcing the car's tapered belt line and its sense of dynamic, strong forward motion.

There are in total twelve exterior colours available for the i30 Fastback: three pearl choices - Stargazing Blue, Micron Grey and Phantom Black, and seven metallic choices - Clean Slate blue, Intense Copper, Moon Rock, Fiery Red, Platinum Silver, Ara Blue and White Sand, plus two solid choices - Engine Red and Polar White. For the interior, customers can choose from three colour options: Oceanids black, Slate Grey or the new and unique Merlot Red interior.

Elegant proportions and sporty driving dynamics

The driving dynamics of the Hyundai i30 line-up are rigorously tested and refined by engineers at Hyundai Motor's European Testing Centre at the famous Nürburgring "Nordschleife" circuit.

The Hyundai i30 Fastback reveals some significant differences compared with the other body types of the i30 range. By comparison to the i30 five-door version, the chassis of the i30 Fastback has been lowered by 5mm and the stiffness of the suspension has been increased by 15%. This provides a more dynamic and more agile driving experience while maintaining a high level of comfort.

Thanks to the lowered roof and chassis leading to an overall height of 1,425 mm, the i30 Fastback is 30 mm lower than the five-door body type, emphasising its elegant and dynamic proportions. With an elongated silhouette, the car has an overall length of 4,455 mm - 115 mm longer than the five-door.

Hyundai i30 Tourer 1.4 T-GDi Premium SE 2017 review

Should I buy one?

The Hyundai i30 Tourer is generously equipped, refined and comfortable to drive, especially in top-spec. But our 1.4-litre Premium SE costs £24,740 once the option of metallic paint is added, which means it faces similarly high-ranking versions of the Golf estate – which is tough given that car arguably has a more beguiling badge.

The i30 Tourer’s lenghtier list of standard driver assist features may help, however, making it as pleasant a space to spend time as any other car in this class. While it lacks the individuality or desirability a car would need to excel against rivals, it scores well for practicality and overall quality, making it a smart and mature option.

Hyundai i30 Fastback unveiled ahead of 2018 launch

Third version of the i30 gets a sleek roofline and slots between the hatch and estate; it'll go on sale in 2018 from about £17,000

Hyundai will add a third bodystyle to its i30 range when the Fastback launches in early 2018 to rival the Audi A3 Saloon and Mazda 3 Fastback.

Revealed in Germany alongside the i30 N performance model, the Fastback has a lower nose and sleeker roofline than its siblings, mixing the lines of a five-door hatch with the rear of a coupé. It sits 5mm lower than the hatch, with a slimmer glassline helping to contribute to the car’s 30mm lower height. Hyundai claims this enhances its aerodynamics as well as lowering the car’s centre of gravity. It measures 115mm longer than the hatch.

The Fastback gets bespoke suspension settings with spring rates that are 15% stiffer to improve agility and on road handling. As such, the car will be the sportiest variant of the regular i30 range.

It’ll come with a choice of two turbocharged petrol engines from the i30 range, the 1.0-litre T-GDI three-cylinder with 118bhp, or the 1.4-litre T-GDI four-cylinder with 138bhp. The former comes exclusively with a six-speed manual, but the larger unit can be specified with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.

The diesel options will be a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder in two states of tune: 108bhp and 134bhp. Both get the option of the manual or dual-clutch gearboxes.

Hyundai will offer the same list of technology with the Fastback as the rest of the i30 range, with a 5.0in or 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system with satnav and smartphone connectivity part of the options list. The car will also get advanced cruise control and additional driver assist programmes including ear cross traffic alert.

Prices are yet to be confirmed, but expect the Fastback to sit between the i30 hatch and i30 Tourer in the range, meaning it could cost from about £17,000.
