Toyota Corolla 2.0 Hybrid CVT Excel 2019 review
Should I buy one?
Ultimately, this hybrid powertrain – in either form, but particularly in the case of the more powerful 2.0-litre version – is a double-edged sword. Real-world fuel economy may well prove class-leading when we test the Corolla more thoroughly, and if that is your priority, then the rolling refinement, interior ambience (clumsy infotainment notwithstanding) and affable handling all add up to something quite special.
But equally, such a confident chassis and some sharp styling deserve a much more engaging motor. If you love driving, the virtues above are unlikely to make up for lifeless brakes corrupted by regenerative duties and only modest performance meted out blandly. As a warm hatch to rival the likes of Ford’s Focus ST-Line X, the Toyota therefore falls short.
For now, let’s settle on four stars and recognise that the reborn Corolla offers its driver far more than the Auris ever did, and much more besides. And if ever Toyota decides this new hatch needs a halo model, I’m sure the good people at Gazoo Racing Meister of Nürburgring will happily oblige.

Theyre smoking some good shiit up at Toyoda.
There are cheaper offerings that no-one ever considers and that's the Renault Megane and Peugeot 308 both have similar specs minus the LED headlights.
Also I'm not sure why the XR model has the same small wheels as mid-level models.

New Toyota Corolla Hatch in SA! Check out local pricing
The new Toyota Corolla Hatch is set to arrive in South Africa shortly (replacing the Auris), with the local range comprising a trio of derivatives at launch.
All three are powered by the Japanese brand’s turbocharged 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, as used in the C-HR and sending the same 85 kW (between 5 200 and 5 600 r/min) and 185 N.m (from 1 500 to 4 000 r/min) to the front axle.
The Corolla Hatch 1,2T XS model will cost you R336 800 and ship standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, while a continuously variable transmission will also be offered (the 1,2T XS CVT costing R347 400). The flagship 1,2T XR CVT, meanwhile, will (as the name suggests) be offered in self-shifting guise only, bearing a sticker-price of R367 100.
With the manual gearbox fitted, Toyota says the Corolla Hatch will hit 100 km/h from standstill in 9,5 seconds, before topping out at 200 km/h. In CVT form, the sprint to three figures takes a claimed 10,4 seconds, with top speed falling slightly to 190 km/h. Fuel consumption, regardless of transmission, is a claimed 6,1 L/100 km.
The XS trim level includes items such as keyless entry (with push-button start), LED headlamps, 16-inch alloys, a reversing camera, cruise control, dual-zone air-conditioning, Toyota’s Display Audio touchscreen system, a full-size spare wheel and as many as seven airbags.
The range-topping XR specification, meanwhile, adds blind-spot monitoring, leather/suede trim for the seats, seat heaters up front and lumbar adjustment for the driver’s perch.
Measuring 4 375 mm long with a wheelbase of 2 640 mm, the new Corolla Hatch boasts a claimed luggage capacity of 503 litres. Exterior colours options in SA will include Glacier White, Pearl White Metallic, Satin Silver Metallic, Caribbean Blue, Oxide Bronze and Scarlet Metallic.

As the first units trickle into dealerships, Toyota has listed the pricing and specifications for its all-new Corolla hatch on its local website - the new model starting at R336 800.
Boasting a far bolder design than the Auris it replaces, the hatch is available in three flavours - XS manual, XS CVT and XR CVT - and all are powered by Toyota’s 1.2-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol engine that made its local debut with the CH-R crossover.
The motor produces 85kW and 185Nm, which puts it in the same ballpark as the VW Golf 1.0 TSI, and Toyota claims a 0-100km/h time of 9.5 seconds for the six-speed manual derivative and 10.4 seconds for the two variants with continuously variable auto transmission.
So what do you get for your money?
The XS, listed at R336 800 (manual) and R347 400 (CVT), comes equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control, Toyota’s Display Audio six-speaker touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera, cruise control, keyless entry, auto headlights, multi-function steering wheel, 16-inch alloys, seven airbags and stability control.
The XR CVT, at R367 100, gets fancier seats, upholstered in a combination of leather and suede, with the front seats also heated and the driver’s perch offering two-way electric lumbar adjustment. It also gains on the safety front, with a blind spot monitoring system fitted as standard.
All versions of the new Auris are sold with a three-year/100 000km warranty and six-service (90 000km) service plan.
But how does the pricing compare to the opposition?
You can get a Volkswagen Golf 1.0 TSI Comfortline for similar money (R337 000) but with less equipment, while Opel’s Astra 1.0T is also in that ballpark at R329 409. Both German hatches enjoy a duty-free advantage that the Toyota doesn’t.
Another interesting, and somewhat underrated, alternative is Peugeot’s 308 1.2T Allure, at R334 900, and while we’re talking French hatches, you can also have a Renault Megane 1.2T Dynamique for 323 900.
The other contenders - Ford Focus and Mazda 3 - are due for replacement soon, so chase those if you want a good run-out deal.

A new generation Corolla sedan is already coming on stream in overseas markets, but South Africans will likely have to wait until 2020 for it to arrive.
It also seems unlikely that the new four-door will be built in South Africa, but there is speculation that the current locally-built Corolla will soldier on as the 'new' Corolla Quest.

With its eye-catching styling and sophisticated packaging, this important C-segment contender now has a distinctly different personality to its sedan sibling. The new Corolla Hatch is built on Toyota’s New Global Architecture platform, which also underpins the Prius hybrid and C-HR compact family car. So, apart from having a lower centre of gravity, a new multi-link rear suspension, 60% stiffer body and improved weight balance, the new Corolla is 40 mm longer, 30 mm wider (therefore generally more spacious) and 25 mm lower than its predecessor.
The standard 6-speed manual ‘box is said to feature rev-matching technology, while the automatic option will be a new Direct Shift continuously variable transmission that offers a 10-speed sequential shift mode, a mechanical launch gear and 3 driving modes: Eco, Normal and Sport.

Toyota Corolla GR Sport hatchback revealed!
Toyota has unveiled its Gazoo Racing-inspired Corolla GR Sport hatchback ahead of an official debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
This angry-looking hatch is set apart from its standard stablemates by the addition of a revised grille (in dark chrome), new side skirts and bespoke 18-inch alloys. GR badges are proudly displayed round the car (featured here in an exclusive two-tone grey hue).
Toyota says the sportier version of the new Corolla Hatch is offered with an array of standard features, including LED headlights, tinted rear windows and front fog lamps. The interior features GR-spec black and red stitching on the steering wheel, instrument panel and shift lever. Cloth seats are standard, with leather optional.
Not quite a full-blown GRMN as yet (though reports suggest this is only a matter of time), this first offering will make use of either a 1,8- or 2,0-litre petrol engine, both employing hybrid technology.
Speaking to the folks at Dutch website AutoRI.nl, Toshio Kanai, deputy chief designer at Toyota, said a high-performance version of the new-generationCorolla Hatch should arrive midway through the standard model’s production cycle. Although the project is still at the planning stage, Kanai confirmed that while the chassis of the hot Corolla Hatch should prove easy to finalise, the drivetrain requirements may take a little longer to refine.

Toyota Corolla GRMN: Will It Look Like This?
Toyota South Africa will be launching its new Corolla Hatch in the next few weeks, but this got us thinking... What if Toyota was to apply the full-fat GRMN treatment onto the newcomer?
Up until recently, Toyota could easily be accused of being a boring and predictable manufacturer. Then, seemingly out of the blue came the Toyota Yaris GRMN, which took what we knew and understood of the compact hot hatchback segment and promptly turned it onto its head. Firstly, the name, GRMN, what's that all about? GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing Masters of Nurburgring. Toyota is slowly returning to the performance sector of the market and has introduced its GR division. It's broken down into 4 pillars. GR Parts (cosmetic package), GR Sport (suspension package), GR (power package) and GRMN (high power package). Of course, let's not forget the Supra returning too.
GRMN is the new badge reserved for the most potent of Toyota products and while we are some time away from a fully-fledged and weaponised Corolla GRMN, we can start the speculation. With the South African Corolla Hatchback market introduction just weeks away, we're likely to see the lesser GR Parts / GR Sport badged Corollas being revealed before the hardcore version rolls in to take the fight to the Volkswagen Golf GTI. We should see a cosmetically sportier Corolla Hatch at the Geneva Motor Show in the coming days.
How do we even know that Toyota will make a Corolla GRMN? Well, Toyota's deputy chief designer, Toshio Kanei was being interviewed by Dutch publication AutoRAI.nl recently and had this to say. "We are currently investigating what would be most effective for the European market, but a Corolla GRMN is certainly realistic. We are already working on that. The development takes place under the supervision of Toyota GAZOO Racing. This department has included the Corolla GRMN in the future plan, but for now, the project is still in the planning stage. " In terms of powertrain, he added "The Toyota Corolla GRMN does not get a hybrid powertrain. We want more power, an even sportier engine and lower CO2 emissions," says Kanei. "A 4-cylinder turbo engine with an engine capacity of about 1.6 litres can be interesting." So, we have confirmation from Toyota that it's in the pipeline!
While the Toyota Yaris GRMN was powered by a supercharged 1.8-litre engine with 156 kW, we think that Toyota will be aiming for around 185 kW with its turbocharged setup, putting it squarely amongst the more established players. Thing is, Toyota currently doesn't have that engine in its arsenal and we're wondering whether it would develop its own powertrain or source one from elsewhere.
GRMN isn't just about straight-line prowess either and you can bet that the suspension and braking will be top notch too, meaning it should be quite potent when it comes to cornering.
Watch this space because if the Yaris GRMN was anything to go by, the Corolla GRMN will also be one incredibly special performance machine.

GRMN is the new badge reserved for the most potent of Toyota products and while we are some time away from a fully-fledged and weaponised Corolla GRMN, we can start the speculation. With the South African Corolla Hatchback market introduction just weeks away, we're likely to see the lesser GR Parts / GR Sport badged Corollas being revealed before the hardcore version rolls in to take the fight to the Volkswagen Golf GTI. We should see a cosmetically sportier Corolla Hatch at the Geneva Motor Show in the coming days.
How do we even know that Toyota will make a Corolla GRMN? Well, Toyota's deputy chief designer, Toshio Kanei was being interviewed by Dutch publication AutoRAI.nl recently and had this to say. "We are currently investigating what would be most effective for the European market, but a Corolla GRMN is certainly realistic. We are already working on that. The development takes place under the supervision of Toyota GAZOO Racing. This department has included the Corolla GRMN in the future plan, but for now, the project is still in the planning stage. " In terms of powertrain, he added "The Toyota Corolla GRMN does not get a hybrid powertrain. We want more power, an even sportier engine and lower CO2 emissions," says Kanei. "A 4-cylinder turbo engine with an engine capacity of about 1.6 litres can be interesting." So, we have confirmation from Toyota that it's in the pipeline!
While the Toyota Yaris GRMN was powered by a supercharged 1.8-litre engine with 156 kW, we think that Toyota will be aiming for around 185 kW with its turbocharged setup, putting it squarely amongst the more established players. Thing is, Toyota currently doesn't have that engine in its arsenal and we're wondering whether it would develop its own powertrain or source one from elsewhere.
GRMN isn't just about straight-line prowess either and you can bet that the suspension and braking will be top notch too, meaning it should be quite potent when it comes to cornering.
Watch this space because if the Yaris GRMN was anything to go by, the Corolla GRMN will also be one incredibly special performance machine.

Pair of new Corolla variants will be revealed next week, growing the line-up of the Derbyshire-built model
Toyota has launched the a warm GR Sport version of its new Corolla, following in the footsteps of the Yaris GR Sport launched last year.
The Corolla GR Sport is one of two new Corolla derivatives that will be revealed at next month's Geneva motor show. The other is the Corolla Trek, a version of the Touring Sports estate model with rugged, SUV-inspired styling.
The Corolla GR Sport, which is said to have improved driving dynamics over the standard car, will be available in both hatchback and estate bodystyles and with a choice of 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre hybrid powertrains. No more details on dynamic changes or specification have been given, but it’s expected to get stiffer suspension derived from the brand’s GRMN models, as with the Yaris GR Sport.
Influenced by Toyota Gazoo Racing, the model gets a new front grille design with a dark chrome finish, lower side skirts and sills and a rear diffuser. It also has unique 18in alloy wheels, privacy glass at the rear and a Dynamic Grey bi-tone paint finish.
Inside, it features sports seats and black-and-red stitching on the instrument panel, steering wheel and gearlever.
More details on specifications and pricing will be revealed in due course, ahead of the car's January 2020 on-sale date.
The Corolla Trek, available only as an estate, is designed to “appeal to those who love outdoor pursuits”, says Toyota.
Also offered with both the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre hybrid powertrains, it gets a 20mm increase in right height and underruns at the front and rear. Inside, there's a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system, two-tone cloth upholstery and matching wood trim.
Sales of the Corolla Trek are due to commence this August.

The Corolla is built here and it also feels like its been developed for our roads. This hybrid version doesn’t show the car at its very best, but it’s still a darn good machine.
So while this particualr powertrain doesn’t engage (apart from with your wallet), the chassis certainly does. Bravo, Toyota, and welcome back to the sharp end of the class.

The difference is that this motor is a turbocharged one.
Remember, that the VW Golf / Audi A3 both use a 1.0 engine. Tiguan and Q3 use a 1.4 engine. Mercedes A200 uses a 1.3 engine.
However the main difference with these are that you have an option to buy the bigger engine.
However there might be good news for next year:
