2022 Haval H6 HEV - Enter the CCP

Well the first service experience was neither here nor there now that I actually managed to get it done.

Got a base model Jolion Pro for the day…which is a huge departure from the H6 when you consider it’s all back to manual everything except the gearbox but I’m not complaining getting a real car as a courtesy in this day and age, I fully expected to get a crappy bakkie or something.

They failed to stamp the service book even though I left it on the seat and considering they had me sign no paperwork or even gave me a 0 invoice of any kind who knows if it even went into any kind of system.

I discovered the little cover on the back of the rearview mirror was missing when I inspected the car and mentioning this for a “oh well, must have been gone for a while” but as much as I can’t be sure it was there the morning I know it was there before since the windscreen was replaced, but granted checking at home I would never have seen it missing in my garage due to darkness and angle. Still the whole attitude of “absolutely not our problem” annoyed me immediately.

They checked the brakes and agreed there is a slight shudder under the conditions I described but pretty much wrote it off as a non-issue and would quote me on replacement (I’m still waiting on the promised email and I already just know I’ll have to ask for it). Without seeing the quote I don’t know if they have any inclination to come to the party and meet me half way, but I’ll be emailing the dealer principal on Monday to start fighting about it.

At the same time these brakes being make of Chinezium and rusting like nothing I’ve ever seen before, if I’m going to pay for it myself either which way I’m inclined to take it to the guys who looked after all my cars out of warranty and upgrading to non-OEM options.

It is significantly better after they cleaned up the discs and pads so maybe with a bit of forced hard braking I can make it go away, but it’s irritating since everything looks brand new and should do 100,000km or more easily.

To their credit they did a great job washing the car, getting into those crevices on the rear bumper black out bits even that I don’t bother with most of the time so I can clearly see they got in there and even treated all the black trim everywhere which I’ve only done once.

So more than likely won’t take it back there for the next service and try the Cape Gate branch instead and see if things are any better.

Overall not great, especially with my experiences of BMW (granted on a bike) previously knowing full well there wouldn’t even have been a conversation about it and they’ve just have sorted it out no questions asked and if I mentioned something like the mirror cover being missing they would have sorted it then and there.

Got a base model Jolion Pro Max for the day…which is a huge departure from the H6 when you consider it’s all back to manual everything except the gearbox but I’m not complaining getting a real car as a courtesy in this day and age, I fully expected to get a crappy bakkie or something.

That's unfortunate to hear but overall, maybe not that unexpected? It sounds like the sort of service I would expect from that level of brand.

Yeah not unexpected.

I did wonder if upgrading to a maintenance plan would make any sense and make them cover it under that but I’m sure that would cost more than simply doing it myself and upgrading to non-OEM in the process.

My bigger issue is that this is clearly a common problem as 4/6 cars I test drive exhibited this behaviour and they seem happily aware of this and don’t see it as enough of a concern to address even.

And it isn’t that much of an issue to Joe Average I’m sure who probably doesn’t even notice, but I anticipate it would get worse and then 10,000km from now I pay for it anyway.

Will see what happens, but like you say this is the difference between the established brands and the new kids on the block.

While I’ve personally only had this warrantied on my Buell before, I know of two friends who had warping discs and pads replaced under warranty on their Polos.

There was a bit of that “if you were the first owner and the car was always serviced by us, things would be different” undertone, which I somewhat understand but it’s also not winning anyone over to stick around when this would be a stepping stone to me buying my next car from them brand new.

I stand to be correct but you don't get the Jolion Pro Max, isn't the Max-thing a Chery thing?

Sorry you are correct it’s just Jolion Pro, not a Pro Max it must have been auto correct that jumped in there.

At least I know you read it that far. 🤣

Pity no luck for an “Ora for a day”.

Would have liked to hear your thoughts.

I don’t see them on CT roads at all! BYD’s, Mini E’s yup, Ora’s? Nope!

My friends GWM P-Series booklet was not stamped when he serviced at cape gate, was a mission to get sorted when he tried to sell it.

I have my service due also pretty soon, the 5000km service which will probably be done at cape gate, as it is closed to me. ( hopefullly they stamp the booklet)

Yeah he told me they pretty much have one at a time that gets sold off directly unless someone orders one sight unseen.

It was a stupid mistake on my part to not check while I was there…as they are definitely not the first workshop I’ve worked with who hasn’t stamped it.

Ironically I’ve never had a third party workshop fail at this…only ever the official dealers, maybe because they all reckon it’s on their system anyway.

What are you driving now?

I got a tiggo 7 now, which gets serviced haval cape gate, hoping I get chery stamp in booklet lol.

All my issues stamps were also with official dealerships also, BMW was very bad at stamping the book.

The things you never think of with an HEV is how your ADHD wife might leave it on in the garage and almost gas the entire house as it fires up the petrol engine every so often.

Went to make coffee and was just thinking what the hell is that smell in my kitchen and then heard the car turn on.

Now I have a placebo headache.

Can you give more detail on the brake issue please? I'm taking my regular H6 for its first service soon, so I want to be able to check (and ask them to check). TIA!

It's a very minor shudder that comes through the steering wheel when braking fairly hard from 100km/h and up. In extreme cases you might even hear it where it almost sounds like airbrakes on a truck or a bit like those "sleep strips" on the road meant to wake you up.

On my car it's very much at the infant state, but when I was test driving them out of the 6 I drove 4 of them presented with this and they were all around the 35,000-40,000km mark so it seems to be something that shows up over time.

It may very well not be an issue on the regular H6 at all, because my suspicion is that this is actually caused by the brakes being used much less due to the HEV factor.

Forcibly hard braking from speed has definitely reduced it for me, so my feeling is that a combination of brake dust and possibly rust makes it more pronounced. It would likely have been a non-issue if the discs were fully ventilated with grooves or even holes.

If this is presenting at your first service I would be very deeply concerned.

If you haven't obviously felt it (or heard it) then I wouldn't worry about it at all, there wouldn't be anything to find.

In the cold and wet jhb weather, I have noticed the HEV air con need to be left of demist mode rather than normal aircon mode. My guess is that with the cold outside temp and the cold engine the climate control turns off the electrically driven AC compressor to save energy but then the humidity rises inside the car causing the windows to mist up. This hasn't been the case for any normal ICE car I have driven so far

Haven’t experienced this specifically in Cape Town, but have noticed if left on Auto and running the car in Eco mode it definitely fiddles with the HVAC a lot and I tend to put the seat cooling/heating on to compensate.

That being said putting it in Eco every time is a pain in the ass and doesn’t make that much difference overall so I don’t even bother.

So just over a year later under my ownership and sitting at 50,000km now I’m still a very happy camper.

Had a chat with my wife about the car and general ownership after a year as we did a bit of long distance for a weekend away and she’s a very happy camper with the little annoyances that were there at first not even registering now. Even the lack of volume knob as a passenger didn’t come up as it’s by and large a set and forget thing and the automatic volume levelling takes over. About her only real comment is that it’s big and just doesn’t work for certain parking spaces at her office, due to pillar placement, something that was never an issue before, hardly the car’s fault that.

As I said above Eco mode and the fact it doesn’t remember it is a pain so I don’t even bother any more as the difference isn’t really noteworthy.

I’ve turned off the rear collision auto braking thing in favour of just the audible warning because it was a little overzealous especially coming out of my driveway into the road or in parking lots.

Many people complain about the gear selector, but I’ve grown to love it both for the space it frees up and just how easy it is to operate.

One thing I would have preferred is having the front cupholders the same as the rear ones with the rubbery grips, but you would lose the ability to fold it away entirely, but this could easy be replaced with the abundance of other storage options in close proximity.

Still have the issue with CarPlay crashing if you went to the car’s own menus and jump back to it too quickly, but have learnt to just give it some time or just press the button on the steering wheel instead and saying “open maps” or whatever I need which seems to circumvent it.

Lifetime fuel economy is sitting at 7.8l/100km with the best full tank being 6.6l/100km, which is very reasonable in my book as I don’t particularly babysit it and just drive.

The brake shuddering thing is definitely a symptom of the EV recharge system leaving more brake residue on the discs due to not using the brakes near as much or heavily as on conventional ICE car and a few hard stops alleviates it almost entirely. Not enough of a bother to go spend money to replace them and will likely just happen again with OEM’s so when the time comes I’ll probably switch it to harder pads to compensate for this. Oddly not dissimilar from my Buell which had similar pads that were too soft for my riding style.

The paint could be better as I feel the car is more prone to stone chips, but this could very well also just be the more squared off shape, but could also simply be chips that were there all along having been second hand that I discover as I wash it more and more. I do regret not forking out initially and getting a full paint detail done, but maybe something to do down the line. A car this size is also a bitch to wash.

Car seems to be fairly balanced and economical on tire wear, which I expected to be far worse for such a big heavy tank of a thing.

One thing I will say is that I don’t quite trust the auto parking brake combined with the traffic jam cruise control when going up an incline. It just take a moment too long for comfort and rolls back slightly before it kicks in and I find myself automatically hitting the brake instead of waiting for it.

All things considered so far so good and I’m very a very happy communist.
