For goodness sakes, I'm sure most of the people complaining about this aren't watching 600gb's of youtube videos each month, they are most probably downloading ILLEGAL things, contravening the LAW so how can you complain that they are shaping your illegal downloads?

What do you need 600gigs for? Are you running some sort of business from a home account? :wtf:
do you have any idea how large full hd videos are getting? not to mention the fact that on private trackers you must maintain 1:1.... then add some hd youtube and of course a few linux distros and you have 600+ gigs easy
illegal? clearly you dont know the law and sadly i dont have time to teach it.
Nobody would be willing to pay any thing near the prices they're paying MWEB if they were limited to only doing 'legal' things on the internet. And MWEB are shaping pretty much *everything*; all they care about is the bandwidth cost, not whether or not you're downloading the latest dodgy CAM.

Still can't see 600gigs a month unless he doesn't have a live at all. I mean to search for the linux distro takes time, and then download the linux distro, (a crapload of distros btw) which takes a lot of time. And then installing it only for it to crap out on him, and then download it all over again. Or start over by downloading a new version again... WOW!!!!

I specifically said in my first post in this thread that it would be interesting to see the T&C from other ISPs in relation to 24/7 downloading. Anyone is welcome to post the details. I'm certainly not going to go and find them myselfIt's not an "Mweb only" thread.
I downloaded/uploaded near constantly for 4 years with Pipex in the UK, so I think I can safely say that they didn't have anything against "24/7 downloading".

That you'll have to ask MWeb. It is a SHAPED account -- of course it's limited in SOME way. Unlimited means "download as much as you want" I guess -- there is NO limit imposed -- WHEN USED WITHIN THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS.
Even the UNSHAPED accounts are LIMITED by the LINE SPEED. You can't download 100TB per month on an UNLIMITED account, shaped or not.

That's nice for you but irrelevant to the discussion. We are interested particularly in the T&C of ISPs in THIS country. We've already determined that comparing internet access in the UK or the USA is pointless.
...and if the T&Cs are ambiguous, vague, too broad or unenforceable; then they will be found to be invalid.
Same goes for T&Cs which are just triggers to terminate those who choose to make use of the service as advertised, or those which are contradicted/compromised by statements (read advertising) made the MWEB CEO and assorted MWEB reps.

Correct. My point being not to take any company's opinion as law. These things can always be challenged both directly and indirectly. Same goes for anything your employer tells you: "You're fired for personal use of the internet!" Me: "Um...no, sorry, everyone else in the office is blatantly doing the same thing, so you have to apply the relevant work rule uniformly before deciding to victimise me again."
Obviously uncapped is not an end-all term here, MWeb and most other ISPs have more than one uncapped account, each made for different purposes/needs. Perhaps they should be more explicit, but they've said on these forums at least that the cheaper home accounts are not made for 24/7 downloading at full line speed (at least on 4Mb where bandwidth costs become prohibitive) which is why they've branded their other account as "Internet Addict" instead of just as an unshaped or business account.
If we accept that the far cheaper accounts should be treated as "home uncapped" or any other term which means they're not for overly intensive usage then there's not that much of a problem. It's not like they're being unreasonable at all, you could even download 400GB+ one month if you need to, but carrying on that type of usage at this price just doesn't make sense in SA unfortunately.

The problem again is that MWEB priced their "4meg" accounts horribly incorrectly. It's not even double the price of the 512 package yet 8 times faster. They should rename the current package to "uncapped lite" and release a real uncapped package at a higher price. Something that isn't based on sat3 and cost R1999p/m.
