This has been discussed and debated ad infinitum in another thread. Let's not get into it here again.

The no-top-up thing is unfortunately a show stopper. That post of the swimmer and the shark comes up again.

This one...

What I don't get is they quick to take away any unused data but are willing for you to go over you alloted data. You paid for what they advertised but won't allow you to use it the way you want to.

We have put measures in place to help you not exceed your data bundle , but there needs to be some responsibilty from the user to also effectivley manage their bundle.

and you point is what exactly? if you've been part of those previous discussions then good but don't think we should not discuss it here because you say so.

You are obviously not looking for the obvious differences between the 2. i think that Jannie might be able to answer that better than me. I will however do my best to get answer from the Billing guys.

Cell C's prepaid offer also sends you an SMS when you have less than 250MB of data left.

On the post-paid variant, you get the same sms, plus when you've completely depleted your bundle and start OOB usage, you get an SMS every morning informing you of your current 'outstanding' balance... so even though you're not always in control, you're at least always in the know regarding your bill...

Thanks VodacomData, I appreciate all the effort you put in and all the answers thus far. You've made it easy for me to make up my mind not to get a Vodacom data package as I'm not willing to take the risk and receive a huge bill come month end because a best effort system has failed.

still boils down to you managing your account , no reall difference between Cell C and Vodacom there.

Good luck to the people who are going to take this offer - probably not bad if you are quite disciplined and a bit risk averse, but no, as expected, not for me - cheers!

oh, and your own software engineers can't take code from the one system and apply it to the other system right?

The 2 are completely different , i'm sure if it was that easy it would have been done already , costs aside

The point is the inability to enforce a limit to avoid OOB on contract. It is not about being on pre-paid, but how that system works vs the cash cow OOB shocker.

its still a matter of preference , not everyone wants to be on prepaid

Its not about pre-paid vs. contract.

Its about real-time billing and hard capping (or the stunning lack thereof) on your post paid systems.

That is beter than a best effort service besides the OOB rate is much less than what Vodacom has current have on offer.

As i recall Morkhans , we have been down this road before already.I'll ask Jannie to give his feedback on that

We have, but you seem to be missing this very point which the forumites are trying to bring to your attention. Top-up (which offers a hard cap) was the kicker for many. You have lost many potential customers due to this omission.

Edit: Here is a novel solution to get around the deficiencies in your system: Create a 3GB deal on Top-up for R149/m x 12months and you can keep the night-owl.

I'm not missing the point , i do understand. I also understand our infrastructre and why we cannot implement it currently on postpaid.

scary part is that, not even that will be good enough.
