360 hard drive.

@Nduimiso : It doesn't have mandatory installs, but love you to tell that to arcade owners that don't have the 3gb hdd space (or hdd really) to install the additional cars and courses that is on disc 2...it's not mandotary to install, but if you can't install, then u can't play on 'em....MS doesn't develop every game, so it's gonna be harder and harder to tell 3rd party developers...for our system, u can't use hdd's to maximise the game performance, features or dlc on extra discs...oops, they already losing that battle with Forza 3...

From 1 PS3 owner, most of my media sits on a 1TB external drive...as i get new media, it gets copied to my PS3 internal drive and as i watch i delete...works great for me, generally music i stream over my wireless network.
thats why when you buy a console you do research, i knew i needed a hdd so i made sure i got the pro, its stupid to spend 3g without even a little bit of research

So what you saying is that if you are an informed customer, you will buy the pro? If not, then get suckered into the Arcade? I don't think M$ will win me over that way.

About the failure rates, i didn't quote, i thought i used a acceptable average :) Should maybe have indicated instead of 1 in every 2, that likely 1 in every 3 360's fail !

Tut, tut, now you're the one grasping at straws. 25% is less than 1 in 4 360s. Math FAIL.

Cool!

Glad that you can admit to some slip up's in your argument. It's good for healthy debate.

On the warranty issue, yes 3 year extended warranty for RROD and E74. Problem lies in the fact that many people don't look after their purchase slips which defeats the point of a warranty in my opinion.

In terms of DLC, yes by all means buy a console with a HDD (out of the box an Arcade of course doesn't have). That is why the Pro and Elite was released. As time goes by MS will release larger capacity HDDs. I bought a Pro as my first and only 360 thus far ... other consumers couldn't be bothered to be honest.

The Arcade is also very attractive to owners of older consoles that had the RROD or other hardware related fault as a cheap replacement. Plug in your HDD and other peripherals and you back to gaming hard.

I refuse to pay the high cost of games at retail level in SA. So I rely on the pre-played local market and importing new games. Easier on the pocket :D

Much respect ;)

Don't recall any slip up's...other than not knowing it support USB storage devices ;)

Anyways, i can see debating will get old quite quickly on this subject, it has been going on for years...but I'm honestly astounded the MS has garnered the support it has even in the light of all the stuff-up's (in my opinion)...

I hear some of your hdd comments, but i'm still to be convinced, with the Forza 3 issue already, gonna love watching how the ship sinks because they excluded hdd's on some models as the next 2 years come and go...especially with dvd format, it only made sense to include an hdd for install of extra content...

The arcade is only attractive (to anyone, including previous 360 owners that need another one because of failure) because of the price point...offer the same model with and without the HDD for R100 diff and i bet the one with HDD is bought every single time...

Orrr....i would like to hear from someone that actually owns an arcade on their feelings on it...

Agree with you on retail pricing...don't buy too often brand new but probably 5-10 games a year at retail...GH series this year (METALLICA FTW!), Uncharted 2, Assassin's creed 2 and MW2...

:P btw, you like your PS3 ?lol

Your last point on the gaming console advertised as media hub or GC...a gaming console is now a media hub...sorry to burst your bubble but that is convergence and consumer expectation....similarly with a phone, if you can call on it, it means nothing...if must have a colour screen, if it doesn't you not gonna get it sold in this day and age, not even at R10 a phone...if it doesn't have media playback, camera, internet (network) access (gprs, 3g, wireless) then it's not gonna sell many either...

Ah, now I realise you're talking out your bum. You don't understand the buying power of the working class: if's its cheap and it does its major function well without the added benefits it will sell, and sell well. Those cheap ass Nokia phones flood the market in this country, in a similar fashion the Arcade sells so well to people who can't afford more than the bottom price but who want to enjoy gaming.

How is saving yourself a pretty penny suddenly becoming suckered by Microsoft? Many people are willing to sacrifice additional functionality just for the pleasure of being able to game.

Not to mention that the purchase is completely flawed in that the customer is told that purchase point that no games do mandatory installs, guy gets home and can't play any of the courses in Forza 3 from disc 2....EISH !!! and like it's been said, MORE PAIN TO COME ON THIS ISSUE!!! Mark out words...

Also, not many ppl do lots of research...any non-gaming parent that buys their kids consoles might not do research....even adults buying for themselves might not do research...it's not right to say if you didn't do research tehn it's cool that you get swindled...

Because MS used that approach to 'sucker' people, the fact that people can only blame themselves at the end of the day doesn't necessarily absolve MS's contribution...can't just blame a drug addict, the drug dealers have to shoulder some responsibility....

An HDD like i've said 20x today is an absolute necessity to a hardcore gaming console..especially one that MS strives to portray as the most powerful, versatile and next-gen console...yah right..

There's optimistic and there's FAIL...Tim my friend, 30% is optimistic, 25% is a FAIL !

All the MS math figures is crazily out of whack, i'm not even sure they know...damn, how many x-box gamers have more than 1 360...a hacked one and a retail one...and they buy only a few games a year but increased the sales figures...how many of those fail and never counted for because the person knows they hacked it and no use to take it anywhere....how many? no one knows....

Greetings timgaul, glad to see you back. You can take hand off your face now ;)
Saving a penny is making sure you get a equivalent product at a better price. If you are ill-informed, then buying the Arcade and then finding out you need a HDD and then forcing you to pay an additional R1000 is pretty much being suckered.

@Dolby : [/B]Yep, seems like you clutching for straws again...Yes, they are small...

You find them small ; I find them pretty large changes :/ I mean as a fullt integrated, super duper home theater machine - I'd hope it could do those :/

even though SACD is a sony format, i couldnt' care about it...it might be technically superior but until music is recorded in 5.1 discrete SS or more, no one really wants anything better than the current CD delivers

Heard SACD playing? It's not just technically superior, it is a reasonable jump from CD. Sampling frequency is up from 44.1khz (CD) to 2822khz (SACD). Frequency is extended to 50khz (u from 20khz on CD) and dynamic range is 120db ... much higher than CD. The majority of albums are 5.1 as well.

Once again, up to the individual - but SACD was a big thing for me when they decided to take it away.

I'm sorry bud, but anyone that is defending MS's decisions..either knows very little about consumer electronics, marketing, media or gaming...they did it for the $$$....

a) I haven't defended what I find to be flaws or errors. I can see and say, 'wow - that was a mistake on MS part' - for example proprietary components. Do you PS3ers think your system is the ultimate machine ever created with no flaws?

b) You come across as IAP ; once again assuming who I am, what I have and what I know. Please. Don't :)

if they dont do research its an impulse buy and they honestly wont care about the HDD, trust me, if they cant be bothered to research, they wont care about saving 5 secs loading time with hdd installs

And why do you contradict yourself, forza 3 is not a mandatory install, its only if you want extra tracks, the game can be played and enjoyed without a HDD, theres nothing mandatory there, the second disc is no different from DLC, you cant use DLC without a HDD, neither can you use forza's second disc, but i dont see you saying all arcade owners are shafted when DLC comes out

but if you're stupid enough not to research if you need an hdd then who is to blame, you dont see people buying the cheapest model of a car then complaining they got suckered because they dont have aircon, more powerful engine etc than the more expensive models.

Err.. Do you still see mono screen phones around? They still do the major function of a phone...to phone right? Now its all about having internet, big screen, touch screen, colour screen, GPS.... The phone has become a convergence device where you can do much more than make a phone call. If it was not the case, then we will all be walking around with a Nokia 5110. Most people that have phones cannot even afford to phone. Most don't even have airtime on their phone....but they do have a fancy phone though.

Much easier to think if your head is out of your bum. :p

Yeah, tell me the parents are going to research the differences between the xbox and ps3? As long as they get a console and they stay off their backs, its fine.

I told you in an earlier post, I have a link to the figures which I have posted on more than one occasion on this forum. The number is 23%, yours is a mere thumbsuck.

And if I currently only have R2500 + R500 for a game? Too high and mighty, I'm afraid.

If parents are buying the console, I doubt the little kiddy would doing half the things you guys are doing regarding media, streaming, wireless etc etc

Yes, yes I do. Especially amongst the blue collar workers.

Dude you are on a fscking very high horse today talking down to the "unfortunate" masses, aren't you?

Well is that MS's fault, must they put a huge sign above every arcade stating no hdd included, of course its no different to sony pretending that blu ray is a necessity for gaming and user gullible idiots to punt their new disc format
