So I'm thinking of upgrading my 384 line to a 4 meg line.
I'm currently on MWeb's 384 uncapped, unshaped package, and mainly use it for downloading...ehh... Linux distro's via torrent sites.

Download speed is a steady 35Kbps, but I'd like to cut the download time.

If I go with the MWeb 4 Meg uncapped, shaped, will I score on the overall download time. With torrents running faster after hours, but shaped heavily during office hours. And if I would cut the download time, will it be by such a margin to justify the extra cash.

if you run your 384 uncapped, unshaped fo 24/7 for one month, you wil do about 85gigs. I download about 150-300gigs a month on 4mbps mweb shaped uncapped.

see after 12am-6am you get 150kbs,so say 150kbs+ for 6 hours a day, is all ready more .

after 6pm it should go up to 50kbs , so yes you will get more done.

Upgrade to 4mb, there is no reason to be paying for a 384kbs line, you will punch yourself in the face when you make the move and compare the speed. 1mbps is snail speed, imagine 384kbs? I don't know how you guys do it, the buffering and the 40kbs download speed limit.

Anyway keep us updated on what you decide to do and the results.

If I get 50kbs after 6pm I'll be happy. Already an improvement. But I've heard so many stories of 4M uncapped users getting 5kps speed on torrents after 6pm. Is this the norm ?

The 5kb is total horse crap. No way that happens unless your torrent has 1000 leachers and 1 seeder.

4 Mb shaped. As said before, even if it only runs at full speed late at night, you'll be able to pull down a lot more.

4 meg is your best bet. I'm with Mweb 4 meg uncapped downloaded 168 gig last month and that was a slow month for me.

I generally don't use torrents but the couple of times I did, the speed was decent. Nothing like the 5kbps you mentioned. Faster than any 384 line can give you.

Rather go with the Axxess just uncapped 4096kbps option. It R496 a month and after hours i regularly max out my line speed on public trackers e.g. piratebay. during the day I get around 60-100Kbps.

Also if you are going to be downloading a lot of 'Linux distro's' then please make sure to install Peerblock as traffic is watched and accounts get suspended for non open source usage!

So I'm thinking of upgrading my 384 line to a 4 meg line.

Ok... so I logged a request at Telkom to upgrade my line, and MWeb already upgraded my account. Hopefully I will be running at 4 Meg when I get home.

Will post the outcome.

@jsheed_sa. Will investigate the Axxess option, but up till now I was very happy with MWeb's service and speed.
And yes... I do have Peerblock running :)

I personally prefer the Axxess option because its IS (never thought i'd say that). It doesn't have any peering problems with SAIX like Mweb has as Saix refuses to perform free peering.

I used axxess and mweb. The k@k thing about the axxess option is you get throttled to hell if you fall in the high usage percentage. Happend to me a few time... I love my mweb.

I don think I can tolerate anything below 1.5Mbps. That was actually a good question, how do you guys survive with that?

I would like to know how is regular surfing during the day? with that mweb account and 4mb line... will you still be able to stream youtube vids and such during peak ours?

yes it s fine ,somtimes vid just buffer like mad on chrome, but then its fine with IE, which is weird, but none the less youtube is fine.

I was still syncing at 384 this morning. Hope Telkom did their part during the day and I'm on 4 meg when I get home tonight.

Is Firefox streaming ok ?

What is the best UPnP server software to use to stream internet shows to my Mede8er ?

streaming should be fine, if tis buffers use IE, then it normally works for me.

i actually did a torrent today , running though day, i will report and say how much data i did though the day.

Use Firefox or Chrome, if they fail, Safari, if that fails Opera. IE should be your last resort...but off that.

You will LOVE the speeds of 4mbps, you won't even believe how you survived so long on 384, I am talking about streaming 720p videos on youtube, fullscreen, no buffering!

ok 71% done on my 2.15gb file. no fancy trick or anything just pure torrent.

49 seeds, so could been more i think :)

which is about 1.5gb my utorrent shows, not bad for day time.

Dammm.... still on 384. Phoned Telkom today to check on status of my upgrade. According to the reference number they gave me, the upgrade was done. But still syncing at 384.
Phoned them back 10min later and the guy tells me the person who originally logged my call asked for a upgrade from 384 - 384 and that's what they did:wtf:
Logged a new request with the tecs. so hopefully tomorrow they will try again.
