Hey

I want to get a uncapped internet account but all i can afford is a 384k line. I want to use this to download torrents and newsgroup files etc. i currently have a 1gig 3G account with MTN. Could somebody please advise me what to do. I have searched this forum and many others for a answer but all posts on this subject are old (2010). If i can at least get 20kb/s download rate on files i would be happy. Please let me know asap what your opinion is. I'm planning on getting something done about my "internetlessness" this weekend. I stay in Lynnwood,Pta TIA

if openweb gold is in your budget go for that if not, go for the 384 mweb package.

openweb= R318

mweb= R219

that is just the account , no line rentals etc

Welcome to mybb!

First off... do you have a POST PAID analog phone line?

If not, you need to get one from Telkom. Then, you want uncapped...there are plenty of options.

Openweb, mweb, afrihost etc. This is obviously a grey area, and everyone will give you their own opinions. Area also influences things, so where do you stay?

You can have your line with a service provider (like mweb uncapped for example) and they will sort out your telkom adsl line rental, so only one debit comes off your account. Or you need to tell Telkom you also want a 384k line from them youself, and you sort out your own ISP for the data.

I stay in pta east. I had a telephone line in my flat but cancelled that about a year ago. I think that getting a openweb or gamco account. But do i need to get a telkom line which is at the speed i want? or can i get a 4mb line and only pay for what i use through it (ie384 or 512) so as to easily upgrade later. Its all so confusing, haha, thanks for the reply

no if you order a 4mb you pay the 4mb, even if you use a 384 account :)

but if your line is with telkom, you can just phone them and they will upgrade it for you, normally the same day.

First you need a phone line. Then call telkom and tell them to enable 384k adsl. MWEB is fine for night time downloading. If you want to download during the day as well then you need an Openweb GOLD account.

Thanks for the helpful advise.
My next problem is obviously canceling my 1gig MTN 3G account. Anybody know what penalties i will have to pay. I saw mweb is giving 3 Months free for a 12month contract. hopefully that will cover the penalties. I work during the day so i will just leave my downloads to "slowly" creep on. Will post when i have a proper internet account again

remember you'll also need an ADSL modem/router. it s recommended that you rather pay cash for one as opposed to going for the freebie crap that comes with a contract. the d-link range is very affordable

Check out the field first

Since Telkom's free 3 month trial Mweb has offered something similar. Perhaps they have a uncapped line you could test out before you buy?

EPIC FAIL.....
I went to MTN to cancel my 3G account and they told me i have to pay a cancellation fee of R5600. So now I'm screwed. It was there in the fine print of the contract. Seems i will never get my Internets. :cry:

Whaaaaat, surely thats illegal?

How old is your contract? Did you get a laptop deal or something?

Its a R1700 cancellation fee. and then i have to pay the remainder of my contract like 13 months at bout R310. Bastards i tell you. i cant transfer to mweb either. it is just a 3g account. no laptop nothing. Useless waste of money and time. and the internet while we at it (jimmy is still angry)
