So apparently according to this: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/47660-telkom-adsl-speed-upgrades-planned-source.html

384kbps and 1Mbps ADSL should be getting upgraded by early next month.

384kbps will become 1Mbps
1Mbps will become 2Mbps

But thus far Telkom have not officially announced it so what are the chances that this will actually happen?

Update: Telkom have finally officially announced it!!

Telkom free ADSL speed upgrades confirmed

The speed upgrades will happen in a phased approach. The process will start in August and run through to September.

Here is a similar article: Telkom boosts ADSL speedsak

Also heres what the ISP's have to say about the speed upgrades: Faster Internet, same price

The 1mb->2mb will probably happen. Not so sure about the 384->1mb one.

I reckon so. I think the ISPs know more than they're letting on. (Got my 1mb Gold uncapped account details from OW, about a week ago already :D.)

Apparently no news from Telkom due to their closed period ?? But expect something official real soon :). If they getting their MSANs upgrades going, this can't be far off the cards.

I expect most iSPs to make this a cashcow for them (as per 10MB we seen) but MAYBE MWEB will do it free :p. No doubt Ti customers will benefit.

Remember your exchange has to handle this so not everyone will get it.

That would be a real shame as I was hoping to have my line upgraded and to have the minimum line speed in this country upgraded from non-adsl of 384k to 1mbps :(

As in an account for it? or a statement?

I pm'd rpm whether or not he has heard anything else from his source and he replied the following:

Hi there

Nothing so far, except that it is likely to be announced at Telkom's results in June. I think it is however a likely event :)

Rudolph

nice job on getting a response from Uncle RPM :D.

You not far off from Stanger and we only got our exchanges upgraded to nice new 10MB + speeds on 21st April this year, you are very likely to see it happening so just have faith. It was a long wait but this extra speed just makes me want more speed lol.

I welcome having our other line upped to 2MB though :)

I'm on the Westville 031266 exchange and my router reports the following:

Mode: G.DMT
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 10240 1056
Rate (Kbps): 384 128

So luckily the exchange for me shouldn't be a problem. It would be nice to upgrade from 384kbps since it really in today's world is very slow. :(

You can upgrade to 1 meg or 10meg right now. Just call telkom and get the upgrade.

Once it has happened, is there any way to find out if my local exchange will offer the speed upgrade?
Our Swellendam exchange currently only supports 4mbps, but I'm hoping my 1mbps will become 2mbps

Most ISPs have already made their entry level uncapped product a 1Mb/s standard at the same price as what their 384 product was.

As a semi technical person - is there a way online to locate your exchange and check your line and exchange speed capabilities, so you know if you are in a good position for an upgrade from 1Mb to 2Mb.

If there is a 1 Mbps to 2 Mbps upgrade, do you foresee ISPs offering 2 Mbps uncapped at their current 1 Mbps pricing?

All DLAMS are capable of 4 meg .The limiting factors are distance and congestion on the DSLAMs.

According to my telkom neighbor, news will be out first week June.
all 384 to 1mb - 1 to 4 and 4 to 10mb.
if not, I know where he lives :)

1mbps to 4 is too optimistic 4 to 10 is highly unlikely
. Lets just hope telkom doesn't let us down.

Wow. 1mb to 4mb..if thats true then I'll be impressed.

Good to hear rumours aiming high though...that way even if the truth falls short then it'll still be cool.

Sorry, I missed replying to the bold portion.... Currently TI customers are sucking the hind tit because SAIX will not give TI better wholesale prices. They cut the IPC costs by 30%, which allowed most ISPs to drop their prices while TI customers are still paying the higher prices.

What is the chance of telkom upgrading the 384 users also will the 2mb users pay more?
